HOMEGROWN ROCKER 6/23/13 (2ND STREET)

Post by Jim Price »

Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the June 23 edition of Rocky 104.9 and Rocky 99's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WRKY-FM (www.rocky1049.com) and WRKW-FM (www.rocky99.com).

This week, we welcomed the return of Northern Cambria-based acoustic trio 2nd Street, winners of this year’s annual “Battle of the Acoustics” competition at the City Hotel! We got reacquainted with Jerry, Jared and Jesse Carnevali and learned their latest happenings, and the three musicians brought instruments and played six songs live for us! Along the way, we updated “Local Music News,” dug a 1981 song by State College’s Red Rose Cotillion from the archive for a “Local Music Flashback,” and reviewed Nowhere Slow’s “Listen/Love” CD in “The Professor’s CD Corner!”

Here is this week's playlist:

HOUR ONE:

SOUTHSIDE STRAYS – “Sprawl”
JACKSON MONSOUR – “Pavement and Trees”
2ND STREET – “This Boy” (performed live on the air)
RON GALLUCCI – “Strength”
2ND STREET – “Shimmy Low” (performed live on the air)
JASON TEEL AND CHUCK COX – “Red Arrow Train”
2ND STREET – “I Won’t Give Up” (performed live on the air)
MYCENEA WORLEY – “Low”

HOUR TWO:

CHRIS WOODWARD & SHINDIGGIN’ – “Hickfun”
MAMA CORN – “Goin’ Up the Mountain”
2ND STREET – “Home” (performed live on the air)
NOWHERE SLOW – “Count on Me”
2ND STREET – “Wild Night” (performed live on the air)
RED ROSE COTILLION – “These Blues” (live) (1981, Local Music Flashback)
2ND STREET – “Long Train Runnin’” (performed live on the air)
BISCUIT JAM – “Bitter Soul”
DREW DODSON – “Ghosts”

On our next program, we welcome Pittsburgh-based modern/progressive rockers Big Atlantic as our guests! We will meet the band members and learn their story, and we’ll hear songs from the group’s self-titled CD! We will also update “Local Music News,” dig into the archive for a “Local Music Flashback,” and review Burden My Surrender’s Channels CD in “The Professor’s CD Corner!” Big Atlantic visits the “Homegrown Rocker” next Sunday night!

And the “Homegrown Rocker” is available for digital download off either Rocky website after each and every show. Just check on either (www.rocky1049.com) or (www.rocky99.com) and download your copy of the show! If you live beyond the signal range of Rocky 104.9 and Rocky 99, you can now download west-central PA’s longest-running local music show!

In Local Music News…

State College favorites The Nightcrawlers are continuing on with a new drummer. Longtime drummer Steve Arnold retired from the group after last weekend, and the group has now introduced Jordan Thompson as their new drummer. Thompson’s resume includes drumming stints for several prominent State College-based groups, including The Earthtones, Cootie Brown and Royal Benson. His first show with The Nightcrawlers happened this past Wednesday night at the Phyrst in State College.

Guitarist/bassist Troy Bugash is parting ways with Blair/Bedford County modern rockers The Sitch, and the group has hired on a new rhythm guitarist to fill his shoes. That new guitarist, Brian, will make his official debut with The Sitch on July 6 at the Bedford Moose.

A State College recording studio will be closing its doors to relocate to Nashville. Frigo Recording will close its operations at the end of this month, and will open up in Nashville sometime next month.

A member of Altoona area folk/bluegrass group Mama Corn achieved a special honor during this past weekend’s Smoked Country Jam Bluegrass Festival near Renovo. A song co-written by Mama Corn mandolinist Chuck Cox and former Hillbilly Gypsies bassist Jason Teel won second place in this year’s Pennsylvania Heritage Songwriting Contest. Chuck got to perform the song, “Red Arrow Train,” onstage during the Smoked Country Jam.
