The area music scene and broadcasting community mourns the passing of Leo Stanek, who died on Friday at the age of 81. From the 1950s through 1981, Leo played drums and sang with local polka orchestra The Vicounts, and he hosted the weekly Cambria County polka radio program “The Sunday Sound of Polka Music” for more than 30 years. He is survived by his wife and five children, including Hastings-based singer/songwriter Gerry Stanek. We at the “Homegrown Rocker” offer our condolences to Gerry and the rest of Leo’s family and friends.
The Hawks Blues Band has been selected to compete in this year’s Blues Society of Western Pennsylvania’s 2012 Blues Challenge. The Hawks will face off against several of western PA’s best blues band prospects on Saturday, April 14 at The Clarion Hotel & Conference Center in Pittsburgh’s Greentree section. The winner of the Blues Challenge will represent western Pennsylvania in next winter’s International Blues Challenge in Memphis.
Party band juggernaut Emily’s Toybox is firing to the beat of a new drummer, after longtime drummer Wade Corbin left the group at the end of December. Altoona native and former Something Fluid, None Other and Cheez drummer Len Lechene replaces him.
Wade and another Emily’s Toybox alumnus, Matt Kyle, are resurfacing in a new country and southern rock group. The new band, Hogtied features Wade on drums and Matt on bass, keys and vocals; along with Matt’s former Camino Sky bandmate Josh Crownover and former Foxxy member Chad Caprio on guitars. Hogtied begins playing shows in Huntingdon and Mifflin counties in April.
Dakota Rose has found their new guitar player, as Matt Elias will start performing with the group in mid-March.
Altoona-based acoustic duo Mr. Dasch & Harmonica Dave has become a trio with the addition of a percussionist and kazoo player named “The Professor.”
