HOMEGROWN ROCKER 9/4/11 (RON GALLUCCI)

Post by Jim Price »

Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the September 4 edition of Rocky 104.9 and Rocky 99's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night on WRKY-FM (www.rocky1049.com) and WRKW-FM (www.rocky99.com).

Thanks to our guest this week, Johnstown music scene veteran Ron Gallucci (http://rongallucci.com/), for a fun and insightful two hours! Currently the bass player for Ribbon Grass and a former member of The Kick and Inside Out, Ron recently issued his first solo CD, Strange Days. We heard tracks from the CD, and Ron’s thoughts, inspirations and insights on the new album and his solo endeavors. Along the way, we debuted new songs from Jimmy Adler, Miss Melanie and the Valley Rats, Twelve Noon and The Black Saxons. We also updated “Local Music News,” dug a 1993 song by Ron’s former band, Inside Out, from the archive for a “Local Music Flashback,” and reviewed Chuck Mason & Blue Reality’s You Know It’s True CD in “The Professor’s CD Corner.”

Here is this week's playlist:

HOUR ONE:

On our next program, our guest via phone will be Jeremy Edge of Imagen Records recording group Candlelight Red! We will also update “Local Music News,” dig into the archive for yet another “Local Music Flashback,” and review Revenge Memorial’s Democracy In Crisis CD in “The Professor’s CD Corner!” Jeremy Edge of Candlelight Red on the “Homegrown Rocker,” next Sunday night AT THE NEW FALL TIME SLOT OF 9 TO 11 PM (due to Steelers football)!

In Local Music News…

A benefit to help out a local musician and broadcaster will take place next weekend in the Altoona area. The Benefit for Craig Boore will happen at Burgi’s Roundhouse next Friday night, September 9, to help out Craig, who suffered a serious stroke in late July. The night will feature food and refreshments, plus live music by Half Tempted from 9:30 to 11:30 PM. Donation at the door will be $10. Craig has played bass for several different band projects dating back to the late ‘70s, and has been an announcer on several Altoona area radio stations over the past two decades.

A benefit concert is coming together for late October to help out the Home Nursing Agency’s Healing Patch. The “Patched Together” Benefit will take place on Sunday, October 23, from 2 to 10 PM at 30 Something in Altoona. The proceeds will go to Home Nursing Agency’s Healing Patch, a center offering hope for grieving children and their families. Bands performing at the benefit will include Felix & the Hurricanes, Bad Daze, Chris Vipond & the Stanley Street Band, NailDriver, Rapid Fire, Cottonmouth, E.V.K., Lies Inc. and more to be announced. The donation at the door that day will be $5.

Some former area Swinghounds are back with a new band project. D.D. & the Pub Crawlers feature most of the cast of former late ‘90s era Altoona area swing and ska combo D.D. & the Swinghounds. Dana Martino sings lead, Art Martino plays bass, Jim Houser plays guitar and Todd Harshbarger plays drums; flanked by sax player Charlie, trombonist Matt Brown, and Darren Gauthier on harmonica and congas. D.D. & the Pub Crawlers will play a mixture of funk, ska and swing sounds. They’ll be playing at a Penn State tailgate party in State College on September 10.
