HOMEGROWN ROCKER 8/15/10 (JUSTIN GARMAN)

Post by Jim Price »

Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the August 15 edition of Rocky 99 and Rocky 104.9's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WRKW-FM (www.rocky99.com) and WRKY-FM (www.rocky1049.com).

Thanks to our guest this week, Johnstown-based singer, songwriter and guitarist Justin Garman (www.facebook.com/justin.garman). We got acquainted with Justin and learned his story to date, and heard several songs he has recorded over the past few years. Justin also brought along his guitar and performed three songs live on the air, including a new song he just penned the day before! Along the way, we debuted new tunes from The Drama Club, Dave Distefano, Rhyne McCormick, Jimmy Adler and Kilmaine Saints. We remembered Pittsburgh guitar great Glenn Pavone (who passed earlier in the week; see “Local Music News” below) by featuring a song from him and the Cyclones, and by digging out a 1984 live track from Glenn with Billy Price and the Keystone Rhythm Band for a “Local Music Flashback.” And we reviewed The Wheels’ self-titled CD in “The Professor’s CD Corner.”

Here is this week's playlist:

HOUR ONE:

HELLO, VIXEN – “My Speech”
THE DRAMA CLUB – “November”
JUSTIN GARMAN – “Silly Love Song”

JUSTIN GARMAN – “Brighter Day (Courtney’s Song)”
THE WHEELS – “Vertigo”
JUSTIN GARMAN – “Life in General” (performed live on the air)
BILLY PRICE AND THE KEYSTONE RHYTHM BAND – “I Can’t Lose the Blues” (live) (1984, Local Music Flashback)
JUSTIN GARMAN – “Maybe Another Time” (performed live on the air)
JUSTIN GARMAN – “A Place with Me”
KILMAINE SAINTS – “The Saints Are Up!”
THE CLOVER – “Old German”

We welcome the return of solo performer and Ganister frontman Ken Gray on our next program. We’ll find out the latest happenings with Ken, and he’ll perform some of his new song creations live on the air! We will also update “Local Music News,” dig into the archives for another “Local Music Flashback,” and review Roy Handy and the Moonshot’s (I’m Gonna Be) Your Best Friend CD in “The Professor’s CD Corner!” Ken Gray returns to the “Homegrown Rocker,” this Sunday night at 8 PM!

In Local Music News…

One of Pittsburgh’s most popular guitar players lost a 3-year battle with cancer on Monday, August 9. Glenn Pavone was 52. A native of Alexandria, Virginia, Pavone relocated to the Pittsburgh area in 1982, and soon rose to prominence as the lead guitarist with Billy Price and the Keystone Rhythm Band. After nine years with that group, Glenn left to form his own band, The Cyclones. On Thanksgiving Eve of last year, Glenn rejoined Billy Price onstage for the first time in 20 years during the “Night of Rock, Rhythm & Blues” benefit at Ace’s Lounge in Johnstown. Glenn’s final live performance happened during a blues jam session at last month’s Pittsburgh Blues Festival.

State College modern rockers Represent The Lie are in the process of regrouping. Three of the group’s members recently left the group to pursue other musical directions. Guitarist Chuck Lavera and singer Brent Carolus are currently auditioning replacements for the departed members, and expect to return to area stages later this fall.

Hollidaysburg’s Eric Wertz has parted ways with northeastern PA-based modern rockers The Panic Switch to devote full attention to drumming duties with Altoona’s Acalasia, who he joined recently. Eric played bass with The Panic Switch for the final time earlier this month at Pellegrine’s in Altoona.
