I'm sure people have heard of these guys from Jacksonville, FL, but they're very underrated. They went Gold for 2 albums, then mostly disappeared, reemerging from a hiatus for a couple years. Some of their songs are even and Top-40ish, while others get to the grit of outlining life. Their song Bleed is a true acoustic anthem to musicians!
Arcane Legion
A German metal band I found some years ago through Myspace. They're very up-beat metal, which is quite uncommon. Definitely something to listen to if you're in a mood for a different metal
Sonata Arctica
Sonata Arctica is a power metal band from Finland. They have terrific writing abilities, often going into stories in their sound, and ranging from upbeat to very melancholy, all of which make you think.
Angra
A Brazilian band of uncommon potency, much like Sonata Arctica without keys, and not quite power metal. However, they too will give you a lot of surprises, and their lyrics are exquisite as well
