Now back to the original thread, as a songwriter what lyrics am I most proud of?
funny you should ask, this is new stuff, The copywrite is pending and if you haven't seen us lately, you haven't heard it, but I'm fond of it.
My girl or my guitar
My Baby Feels like Fightin
My woman raised her voice
She said, ‘I done put my foot down
And I’m givin you a choice”
She Said “Baby, this just can’t go on
Things can’t be the way they are”
And she said it to me this way
It’s your girl or your guitar
She said, “I don’t mean to hurt you baby
But I gotta stand for my rights
I been at home and all alone
For the past 3 Friday nights
You need to quit this foolish playin
and take that good job washin cars
It’s time for you to be a grown-up”
So It’s your girl or your guitar
Now It ain’t like I’m out cheating
Or running round the town
She wants me to take her dancin’
She just wants me more around
But when you say love somebody
Shouldn’t you love them as they are
But she wants me to decide, now
It’s my girl or my guitar
Since I was young I played my guitar
It’s always been a faithful friend
It don’t need so much attention
Just a string change now and then
It don’t complain when I watch football
Or about the smoke from my cigar
It won’t ever make me choose
Between my girl or my guitar
Now you know I love you baby
You bring me so much joy
And I just as soon would ring your neck
Than see you with another boy
But it’s time for you leave now
And I don’t wanna know where you are
Cause you way out of line to make me decide
Between my girl and my guitar
That's our new stuff, and we have 3 or 4 more you probably haven't heard so come and see us soon and hear it live!

heres some lyrics we are proud of. they point fingers at situation no one seems to do much about...
Sodom and Gomorrah
Soul destruction
Rise up your filthy crown
Bless the child – ecclesiastical liar
Raping the doctrine
No forgiveness for your sin
Loathsome scent of despise
I label you the whore of Babylon
Entrails hung below a crucifix
Weeping at your sickness
In the name of god
You rape and neglect
Thou shall not touch another soul
Bow down to pretense of conviction
You are the principle sacrifice
Repenting hands - the incurable crime
Brutal faults concealed to darkness
In the shadows abuse lies widespread
How can you ignore sodomy?
Violent bloodshed is righteousness
Denied salvation
In the name of God
You rape and neglect
Thou shall not touch another soul
Bow down to pretense of conviction
Where chaos has yet to pay its toll
You are the principle sacrifice
Save the child
Despise the crown
At the hour of your demise
Anticipate no paradise
There is no deliverance
For the thief that abuses the infancy
Fuck you priest;
you deserve to die
Sodom and Gomorrah
Soul destruction
Rise up your filthy crown
Bless the child – ecclesiastical liar

Picasso was a poor painter. Look how distorted everything was, and are we supposed to believe that blue was the only color that existed? And that Andy Warhol... you do know that was just a Campbell soup can label blown up, right?
This cat would have a field day with my lyrics (which I WON'T post because it could constitute first publication in a court of law, and endanger any publishing deal a given song could have). I write about 1/50th as much as I used to, because my lyrics are getting too literal... I've always been able to tell a story, and still can in spades, but music is supposed to be art, too. I'm sick of the old "moon-June-spoon" rhyme scheme cliches. I want, make that "need," to create some art. Art is supposed to be edgy sometimes to make it move forward, it MUST push the envelope. I don't understand everything about the Dadaist art movement, but I'm sure it was necessary to art, otherwise everything would look like a vintage Coca Cola poster.
I know a lot of "The Rules." I wouldn't hesitate to talk shop with any Berklee grad because I'm proud that I can hang at that level technically. I wrote my first song at the age of 8 (I'm 40 now), I wrote when people made fun of me for it, I suffered and sacrificed and learned and listened, and there is little any college kid could teach me about songwriting. My nickname isn't Songsmith because my last name's Smith (duh, it's not!). It's that because it's the only thing I was ever good at, the only reason anybody ever paid attention to me, and the only musical thing that ever came naturally... I busted my ass to accomplish everything else. My advice to Metalrulz is, now that you know the rules,too...

I had not idea that writing lyrics had to be such literature mumbo jumbo. Writing lyrics isn't like being in English class for the rest of my life. Holy hell. It is called expression. You know what you dumb son of a bitch, I use the word "ain't". I may even put that word in a song. Your ears and eyes will really burn if you listen or read the lyrics then. What an ass-hole!
Actions speak louder than words!!

SUCK UPON
" Suck Upon " " The Grimm " written By my mom.
Best lyrics ever
Best lyrics ever
I'm glad I didn't have to fight in a war, I'm glad I didn't get killed or kill somebody, I hope my kids enjoy the same lack of manhood
By your Mom! You kill me, dude! Seriously, nobody could view that song as a deep, meaningful heart-wrenching thing, but first of all, it's the lyrical smack in the face that makes it art, and secondly, and most importantly for me, it's just amazingly catchy. I have literally heard that song one time, ever, at the Rockpage benefit, and I can still sing the damn chorus word-for-word, including the melody. I was singing it (albeit very QUIETLY) at work just a few days ago. That, my friends, is the measure of a good song, at least to me. The Grimm should be big stars.----->JMS
Yeah, I think 'Suck upon' is a great song too, (it was a hoot to help out at the RP benefit, even tho I got the words mixed up), You can't help but remember it (at least most of it anyway. . .sorry) and if that's not a hallmark of great writing, what is. and best of all, it's just fun.
Not everything HAS to be angry or depressed and since when did those things automatically equal 'Deep' anyway.
ol what's his name was chiding me (in his lefthanded, witless way) for injecting some humor into lyrics, humor has a place in music, as do, sadness and rage, and love and sex and everything else that comes along with just being human.
As long as it's honest,
as to structure, since when are there rules to rock and roll?
that's what you get from that there book lernin, junior,
you get examples of what worked in the past and that's all, the past is but a pointer to how the future will be IF YOU DON'T Change it.
Theory is great and rules are fine but if you are a slave to them, then you just re-create the same ol formula, you hack up the same ol crap, and WHAT YOU HAVE TO SAY, which is why I write to begin with, gets lost cause the tried and true STRUCTURE is so friggin boring and beaten to death, nobody hangs around to listen.
by the way, what's his name uses 'The Pina Colada Song" as an example of structure, okay sure but artisticly (to me anyway") it's formulaic crap with a happy, trite, hollywood ending.

For the record, I liked the "Pina Colada Song." It was written as a story, with excellent structure, and a nice twist at the end, turns out it was his "lady" who answered the personals ad. It was written according to a formula known to be used by Tin Pan Alley, a movement of pop songwriters in NYC, starting around the time recorded music started selling well, from the 1920's to about the time rock & roll took over in the mid-50's. It was pop writing for public consumption (I'm okay with that), usually characterized by uptempo, uplifting songs with catchy melodies and repetitive lyrics, especially on the chorus. Picture two Jewish guys in fedora's and white shirts and suspenders at an upright piano, in a little apartment in Hells Kitchen... can you picture it? That's Tin Pan Alley. Anyway, it worked for many years, until rock & roll put more of a Black spin on things. TPA structure still gets used, by country-pop, by Broadway, and by teenie-bop, because it's very accessible to the average young listener... it's a recognizable structure, which is a comfort to the casual listener. What it isn't , is the ONLY acceptable way to write a song. Write what moves ya, man, not what I tell ya.----->JMS

Well "Grimey" is gone but I have to admit that I am dissapointed in this thread. 9 posts of original lyrics and several of those were from years gone by. Maybe this is why the original compositions go over so poorly in this area? I must also admit that the tune for "Suck upon" pops into my head every now and then..

And of course, I can't leave out this one...
"Live music's here to stay
Professor Price will show the way
It's in the air, it's everywhere
The Backyard Rocker rocks!"
- "Backyard Rocker Rocks" - Felix & the Hurricanes
Fewer more profound words have been sung on area stages...
Then again, I might be a little bit biased!
(I couldn't resist.)

You may know all the theory in the world. You may be a student at Berklee as well grimesey but you're missing the point.
Music is about FEELING and SOUL, NOT perfect rhymes and structure. Did Hendrix always use perfect rhymes and structure? No. He knew how to play in about 3 or 4 keys and he changed music forever!!! I'm sure Slayer and Metallica don't do everything perfect either, and they still kick ass!!! I know these guys dig deep for the lyrics they write as I do. It's about what sounds and feels good not about some formula that you learned at Berklee. Being a good musician doesn't mean you have to be some kind of virtuoso or an English major. You just have to love what you do and do it with passion and emotion. People will respond to good music if they can see and hear that fire you put into it. When I sing one of my songs I give every ounce of myself to that song in that moment and I play with passion , aggression, and whatever emotion that the song evokes for me. People can FEEL that and they do respond to it.
And props to the rest of you guys. I know a few of you and respect you all for holding the torch for metal and rock in the area. Don't let this chump get you down. He is nothing but a loser egomaniac that will be playing "Escape" in some casino in Vegas when he's forty. Yeah he may be makin more money than us, but at least we will be doing what we love for the love of it on our own terms.
By the way "Escape" is one of the stupidest songs I have ever heard I hated it in the 70's and I still hate it. " bubblegum fantasy cheap novel bullshit " (That's slang for your info grimesey no need for a complete thought) Try a lyric from SLAYER
"Take a good look into these eyes cause I'm the one that's gonna tear your f*#&in heart out!!!!!" Does it make enough sense for you? Is it a complete thought? Not a fragment oh no!!!
Oh and one more thing grimesey. G.F.Y.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

another brick in the wall?
Here is a song called
"Song # 2"
I can’t believe that I will never see your face again
I can’t imagine how I’ll ever walk outside
I can’t remember if I loved you or just felt your shame
I only swallow when I think of what’s inside
Well I bless the flower
That I left upon your grave
And I pray to the Power
That my fucking soul will be saved
I don’t believe that I will ever know your touch again
I don’t pretend to see the things you want me to
I don’t remember if I loved or despised your vision
I only swallow when I know you want me too
Well I bless the flower
That I left upon your grave
And I pray to the Power
That my fucking soul will be saved
I won’t exhale as I lie empty with the world around me
I won’t exclaim if I see angels in my view
I won’t be shallow as we wallow in our own excretion
I only swallow when my father tells me to
Well I bless the flower
That I left upon your grave
And I pray to the Power
That my fucking soul will be saved

Road Two Know Where
(the road to nowhere)
Well I'm sitting by the side of the road in the middle of nowhere,
Wondering what to do with the rest of my life.
And I ask myself a question, with no easy answer to spare,
And I wonder what I'm doing here.
You loved me first when I was placed in your arms.
Lifted me up, when I was ready to fall.
You gave me all the answers to my lifes' questionaire,
And I wonder what I'm still doing here.
((You know just...))
Sitting by the side of the road in the middle of nowhere,
Wondering what to do with the rest of my life.
And I ask myself a question, with no easy answer to spare,
And I wonder what I'm doing here.
You walked into my haphazard life.
Held out your hand, and lifted me high.
I followed you so blindly, like love often does.
And I found out the hard way what a liar love was.
((So I'm still...))
Sitting by the side of the road in the middle of nowhere,
Wondering what to do with the rest of my life.
And I ask myself a question, with no easy answer to spare,
And I wonder what I'm doing here.
You walked into my broken down dreams,
Sat down beside me, said life, ain't what it seems.
You took my hand, you held me tight, you made me stop and see...
That it's lifes' questions not answers that will set you free.
((So I'm no longer))
Sitting by the side of the road in the middle of nowhere,
Wondering what to do with the rest of my life.
And I don't ask myself those questions, with easy answers to spare,
Cuz it's the journey that will get us there.

Please Mama
This is a really old song that I wrote that I am someday going to re-produce. It is called "please Mama" , the lyrics concern abortion and our inborn desire to control the lives of others.
See the people on the streets
They've got God on their side
You know the way that they feel
There going to tell you whats wrong and whats right
Feel the girls 2nd heart beating strong,
She's got a needle deep in her arm
The world is full of people like you
They got nowhere to run
They got nothing to do
(chorus)
Please mama, let them know I forgive you
Please mama, tell them that it's our right
Please mama, your my hope for salvation
Please mama, won't you make up our minds
Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum
They got the signs in their hands
There marching up and down the streets
Trying to make you think they understand
Big man, throws a girl to the ground
He shoves it in and spins it round and round and round
You call that life? WellI have to disagree
If you want the truth, it all depends on what you see
( chorus )
Does this mean I am "Pro Life"? No it means I am "Pro Choice".
Comments, critiques? Go ahead guys, I know you want to!
I have thick skin...LOL:-)
