Well, gave the H.T.s a go, but still have the same issue with Celestions.
Once I put a 12AY in the pre section of the Carvin could distinctly hear
the difference between the Eminence and H.T.

Just too bright for me. SO, went back to looking at a few other options.
Decided to give Eminence Red ,White and Blues a try.

Looked at all the "new" Ems and it looks like these are the more versatile
of them.

As an aside, goin' to experiment a bit and try a TungSol in the second
gain stage, and pull a couple of the EL84s to see how that there does.

21AY really opened things up, sound-wise, especially on the clean side.
Interestingly, took off some of the headroom. Can get to a high volume
quick but it maxes at a lower volume than before.

THAT being said, when I was in the basement trying it out I got a visit from
my son: "Can you turn that down? Things are falling off the walls and I'm
trying to do my critical writing homework". Kids nowadays. Such screwed
up priorities.

That's weird. Every Eminence speaker I have ever tried has been too bright for me. Different strokes for different folks, I guess. 8)

what's the latest on this project? Did you try the Red,White,and Blues speaker yet?

Are you still using the 12AY in the pre section?

As a little side note, I picked up Dave's Hellatone 60 and put it in my Peavey Vypyr 75 modeling amp. The results were pretty good.

I recorded some clips for the Peavey forum, but there's no reason not to put 'em here too:

Vypyr Plexi (crunchy)
Vypyr Brit (clean)
Vypyr Diezel (heavy-ish)
Vypyr JSX (lead wankery)

Sounds really good with your setup (Like you said, grass is always greener). I was
just goin' to e-mail you to see how it was working out.

Ya, did try the RWB. Too..."thick" sounding. Would be an excellent jazz speaker.
Been thinking about keeping it around just for that reason, but not sure. Tried to do
as much looking around to see what would work best, and not really gotten all that
far (Though, Rob did recommend the Texas Heats). What I HAVE found is that the
old Eminence Legend that I'm running in the 2x12 is perfect. SO, may either keep
things the way they are (With the newer Em alongside) for a while or look for another,
older, Em Leg.

Something else I've been running into is not having the "lead" stuff sound as good
as I'd like because of our back-line volume being pretty low (Figured it'd be an issue
with all tube. When I say "low" it's not totally quiet...least not on my side...but the amp
is barely turned up past 1.5). I've been using an ElectroHarmonix NanoBoost. It does
it's job well, but needs more volume to really be effective. I'm now running the Carvin
with 2 of the 4 power tubes.

I picked up a MXR SuperComp compressor to give a try for the lead-y junk. Should
be here by the end of the week.

What I MAY also do is rewire the 2x12 cab so I can run one, or both, speakers,
depending on where we are, or mebbe build or pickup a 2x10.

Keep getting all this stuff, and more and more, a nice Boss GT floor unit into a nice,
simple 30w solid state 1x12 combo is looking dang nice. Stupid gear.

so you've been only swapping out 1 speaker this whole time and keeping 1 stock speaker in it?
(sorry, I got confused a little) :D

Very nice clean tone Jimi, what guitar and pup combination were you using for these sounds?
The Peavey sounds very fresh for being a modeling amp.
What method of recording did you use?

You cant just throw this kind of stuff up on here and sneak away, it's not that easy.. :lol:

The guitar is an Epiphone Bob Marley Les Paul with Gibson USA pickups (not sure of the exact model). All the clips are on the bridge pickup.

It's recorded with a Sennheiser e906 through a Line 6 USB interface into Audacity. No processing anywhere in the chain.

The Vypyr is a keen piece of gear. The interface is sooooo smooth and the tones are tight. Peavey seems to be having some first generation EPIC FAIL issues with them, but once they get the bugs worked out I think it's going to be a huge product for them.

Not yet. The foot controller isn't shipping for another month or so, so I'd have to switch channels by hand! :shock: :D

And by the time the foot controller comes out, I won't be in a band anyway. But at least it'll save me from walking across the living room to change channels.

No, I've been trying different combinations. But, the old Eminence just seems to be

also run it a couple of times using one speaker or another, just to try out.

Actually, the 2x12 cab is a Lopo that came empty. The speakers are just what I've
had around, borrowed, or bought recently. Optimally, would have Celestion Golds,
BlueDogs, and every incarnation of Eminence, et al, to run through. Since that's just
crazy talk I'm leaning to using what I know I like and just being done. Experimentin's
expensive.

Oh yeah, am still using the 21AYs in the pre of the clean.

Yup, that's it! AKA the Jimi Hendrix/Lenny Kravitz/Che Guevara/Zach de la Rocha model. People have all kinds of crazy guesses for who's face that is.

It came with Epi Alnico pickups. The Gibsons are chrome, and came from one of those guys who swaps in EMGs before even plugging in his new $3000 LP. :D

I really like that guitar alot! I also like the new Les Paul Junior, cause it has only 1 pickup :twisted:

Yea it definitely gets expensive and thankfully the style of music that I play doesnt require the transparity of other styles.
Meaning that I'm able to hide behind the gain. Not that my rig is crappy mind you, it's just that I rarely use clean and no effects, so I guess that my overall "picture" or sound doesnt have to be as compatible with each piece of gear as some other players might have to be.
Dave, you mean "12AY" not "21AY" correct?
Also, is the 12AY like a 12AT7 or a 12AX7, where it provides a different point of breakup?
Are the "AY's" a cleaner tube than the "AT" or "AX"?

The 12ay7 has about 45% of the gain that a 12ax7 has. Fender usually uses 12ay7's in their amps. That's a big part of the Fender clean sound.

Towards the lower middle there is a few designations and their gain, but the source for the information seems to be GE, all tubes are different..

Very nice! thanks bro!

My Marshall 9200 uses an one AT and one AX per side. that's the way it was designed, and I didnt know that. I thought they were both AX's until I had it in for repair and re tubing.
I was told thst it would be wise to keep one of each like it was designed, rather than to use two AX's.

Also because of that, I had to use ElectroHarmonix AT and AX because apparently TungSol does not make an AT.

You can go ahead and throw 2 12ax7's in there. You just probably won't like it. I've tried that before and the clean channel just gets ratty on amps that are designed around a 12at7 or other.
