OK Doug ! I'll play quieter at practice ! Honestly , I've been working at home trying to see how softly I can play. You could have just said something, you didn't have to do it this way! LOL

This reminds me of an old cigarette commercial (giving away my age) that says "I'd rather fight than switch". [And a free pair of drum sticks to anyone who can name the cigarette company]

Unfortunately we don't have volume controls like everyone else in the band. Acoustic drums just sound better to me. I've spent well over a $2,000 just for 7 or 8 snare drums because their unique tonal qualities. Granted , most of the audience wouldn't hear the difference, but I'm playing for me, then the band , then the crowd. Because if I'm having fun then so too will the crowd.

Real drums just feel good. And I love the primitive aspect of drumming. I mean , look at us, We take two wooden clubs and hit things to make noise, sometimes as hard as we want, sometimes as fast as we can. No wonder everyone wants to be a drummer.

I could have sworn it was Lucky Strikes. I don't even recall Taryton, but that's who it is.

RobTheDrummer, I don't want to venture a guess as to where your drumsticks are at or have been, for that matter!

SpellboundByMetal, something tells me they're not unlucky, just terribly relaxing.

I have tried elec kits with and without mesh heads. It would be nice to have one at home for the neighbors and practice, but live i will stay with a real kit.

I myself after wrapping over $4K in DW's for just the shell kit, there aint no way in Hell I will Change what I play....
I will play electronics if I have to but there not going to be mine.... :D

......Dynamics.....are awsome.... We played Burgi's this past Friday night and we had no monitors for the first set, and I altered the way I normally play.Cut back the stike force, played a little to the edge of the drums and
wha laa you could hear the mains enough to play threw to the break.
Yes it was awkward for everone but prime example.... Dynamics....

Hey Rob. I have them right here for you. I hope you like 747B's. Still in the wrapper.

BTW we need a drum night. DW night with Ed. and someone said they'd bring their UN-acoustic kit to a drum night. Honestly, maybe they do have their place. (?).

I thought I had a snare addiction. Check out this guy's collection !
Then ask HIM if he wants to play an UN-acoustic snare.

If that ain't obcessive-compulsive snare behaviour, I dunno what is.

Hawk, I got a migrane just looking at all those snares!! Holy Shit.

Just kiddin!

Nice to see the responses. Here's my 2 cents:

I think it would suck to have to revert to electronic drums, as they don't have the feel, tone, or near the dynamics of acoustic drums. Even the most expensive ones still do not sound that "real" yet, but they are getting closer.

I will say that one advantage ( and the only one really) to electronic is controlled volume. But I have worked with a couple of guys, one just the other night, who have such great control behind the kit that they can play softer and not miss anything.

When I used my all electronic V-drums (TD-8 brain) with Retroactive I spent alot of time tweaking them but I got them to where it was actually awsome at times. It's so hard to get the sounds balanced in volume through a big sound system. I used all 4 outputs on my TD-8 brain. I assigned kick to one output, snare to the second, toms to the third and cymbals to the fourth. It was alot easier for our soundman to mix the kit. I had an 8 channel powered head right where I could reach the controls. I ran my own monitor mix of keys, my V-drums, guitar and bass. I powered 4 Carvin 12" w/horn speakers, two on each side of me facing me. They didn't quite give me the low end I wanted but they didn't over the band too much. I really wanted to run 2 15's and 2 top cabs. That would have totally been the muther truckin' BOMB. If you really put the time in tweaking them, you can get a suprising amount of dynamics out of them. Definately not the same as real drums but surprisingly close.

The worst part about using an all electric kit is the solder connections inside the pads break often. Way more often then I thought they would. It sucked ass to be in the middle of a song and the damn kick trigger's solder connection breaks or any of the pads. Now the band has to take a break while you fix it. I can't remember how many nights I had to break out the soldering iron. If you are gonna use an electronic kit make sure you have a soldering kit with you at all times. Roland will sell you the gold coin looking sensors that you solder the wires to. Buy a bunch of them, they are only $8.00 each. Those are for the PD-5, PD7 and PD9 pads. Keep a spare pad or two and a spare kick trigger if you can afford it.

I stand by my td-20's 100% the dynamics are there they play, feel, and sound just as good in my opinion..... I feel alot of you guys are judging elctronics from old tech. The newest technology is amazing. I by no means am saying they are better than real drums but i feel they hold their own. And my options are endless. If anyone has doubts and would like to try the newest and best out there let me know i'd gladly share the experience anytime. I will say that they are an unrealistic solution to the noise issue strictly from the finacial stand point. I'm paying what i could of for a killer custom kit. But the advantages for me being trapped in an apt. and playing several diff. styles of music turned me to the electronics side. I have not one regret after several months of using them for prac, gigs etc.
I can tell you this i will get the nice studio kit too when i get the funds i still have the ole dog in me but i definatly have learned a ton of new tricks since i got the td-20's.
I can say this if you haven't actually spent the time behind the 20's then keep an open mind till you do. I did a ton i mean a ton of research and played just about all of them out there. The 20's are the best and most accurate to the real thing to date. Keep in mind they have limits but so does anything you play.

I've seen Todd play enough over the years to know that if he digs them, they just might be cool. I still have my doubts about playing on stage with them though. I tend to only listen to the drummer and it just seems like something that would feel wrong.
