Woops, forgot to add my comment on what I have quoted from nosurrender regarding your list of 'influences'. I don't know where you got this list, but you somehow don't seem to be a typical fan of this SanFransisco sound, forgive me if they really are your influences no offense meant, but can't really imagine you groovin to White Bird, Prescence of the Lord, or Acupulco Gold & Silver. Or Grace's Great Society. That society and this era of music was all about peace, love and acceptance; wide open minds. No lasers or apparent E_Ner_Gy to speak of.

i was 4 yeras old when i first picked up an instrument and that was in 1988, which obviously was about the time when hair metal was coming to and end and grunge and alt-rock were first starting to take off. but i first learned to play by listening to alot of my parents vinyl albums. Being both a guitarist and trombonist I would have to say that Chicago has always been a big influence in my life, having been among the first of their kind.
Videos destroyed the vitality of rock and roll. Before that, music said, "Listen to me." Now it says, "Look at me."

The answer to the first question would be my father. From the day I was born rock and roll was in my veins. I remember living in Okinawa during the Vietnam War and my dad playing his guitar with the reel to reel blasting out The Who, The Beatles, Floyd, CSNY, all the greats. It was great. Question #2 would have to be my Grandmother bless her heart.
She always encouraged me to sing but I was too shy. I would sing for her around the house or in the car on trips. We had a blast. Too bad she can't see me sing now. Don't let silly fears hold you back. Also alot of credit to Griff for encouraging me to join a band. You rock Mikey.

You know what, initally I was gonna say my biggest influence was myself because I wasn't rasied by musicians. I always felt the need to be a drummer, always...but I realized tonight that my biggest influence is all yinz people on here! I can read about bands and stuff and all I wanna do is go play. All the people I've met have encouraged me and I love you all for it! Thanks.

I must say it was my Dad that got me started, he allways played old country tunes on his acoustic. I still have that guitar he gave it to me in 1977 when I started to play guitar. As years went by I got influinsed by Angus Young, Ted Nugent, and Styx (paradise theatre really inspired my sax playing), anyway this was a big inspiration of mine in the late 70's and early 80's then it turned into playing bass and steve harris from Iron Maiden was it then and it all got wider and wider on my tastes of music and I like many artists and differant musics. When I was in high school my older brother played in a country band with some older dudes )well older than me) and they needed a lead guitar player and I got the gig we played every weekend back in that day you could play in a bar if you had a parent with you and the one guys mom went to every gig and we would say she was my mom it was cool and worked for us I guess that is why my spelling is the way it is I allways payed more attention to reading music when I was in school instead of english class (lol) Now I seem to lean more to the classic side of things, which no surrender made me think of a band I was in we played groups like Cream, Wishbone ash, Robin Trouer, it was all good and a good time.now my inspiration is YOU, ALL THE FANS THAT SUPPORT LIVE MUSIC that is what keeps me going
I had a neighbor who lived Close to me and he played Drums and would be Practing all the time and I would sit and Listen to him and his band that he was playing in called BRASS TACKS Practice, and Listing to GREAT Bands Like Led Zepplin JOHN BONHAM FREAKIN ROCKS and some other Great Bands from the 60s & 70s helped me get Started in Music

Question 1. My parents, Grandparents and my sister. There was always music in our house. We didn't even own a TV until I was in 6th grade, but the radio or record player was always on. (That's why I'm an avid reader too, no boob tube to entertain me.)
Question 2. In about 1961, I went to a dance at the Tipton Firehall. The band was Bill Jones and the Blairmonts, with Bill Jones on guitar, Tom Yingling on drums and Dean Parshall on guitar. No bass player, but they reallly rocked the place.
Bill was playing a cherry red Gibson SG and when I heard that guitar, I knew I had to have one and I knew what I wanted to do. I bugged my parents until they bought me an inexpensive Montgomery Ward guitar.
A year or so later, I moved up to a Fender Jazzmaster and a Fender Bassman, and by that time my big influences were The Ventures, The Beach Boys, Chuck Berry, and the Four Season. In 1963 I founded The Impacts.
Dean Parshall was killed in an auto accident quite some time ago and I don't know what happend to Bill or Tom, but thanks guys. I've had a lot of fun, been a lot of places and made some good money in the last 43 years and I'm going to keep playing as long as I can.

I can't even remember a time when I was not listening to the radio and I guess just being able to grow up in the 60's did it.
Watching Felix and Jason Feathers play guitar gave me the inertial push to go a buy a guitar from Mystic Music. Now of course I am hooked, hoping by the time I retire from my full time job, I might actually get good at this most humbling of instruments. Anyone want to start a blues/rock band in about 7 years??

this may sound funny coming from a 20 y/o ex punk bassist, but the band that got me into music to begin w/ was the rolling stones. Sympathy for the Devil is still my fav. song. the band that made me pick up a bass and start playing would have to be AFI. as ashamed as i am now to say that since sing the sorrow was a huge flop and davie's now gay. but yeah, i was a big AFI fag and wanted to play just like hunter.
finger deep in the borderline, show me that you love me and that we belong together, relax turn around and take my hand...
