I even heard one analyst say that it's possible that USC and Texas are far enough ahead in the BCS equation that they might still be in the championship game even if they do lose once.

My sentiments exactly JP. A playoff system is the only way to find the true national champion. Also it could be worked out to incorporate the existing bowl games so that sponsors and venues aren't losing money.

I think next year we'll learn if the BCS is ever going to work perfectly or not when they implement the "plus 1" system - basically what that does - is the regular 4 BCS games will be played and after the last BCS game - the number 1 and 2 teams will play for the national title.. should be interesting..

Save for that damned one last second vs. Michigan, the Lions have taken care of their business for the regular season, and now just have to sit and wait to find out whether they play for a National Championship or not. Miami and Alabama are clearly out of the picture. USC got a good challenge from Fresno State; they take on UCLA in the rivalry contest for Los Angeles supremacy on Dec. 3. I think this game could turn into a shootout; and if that is the case, all bets are off. UCLA could pull the upset here, particularly if USC's defense is as porous as it was against Fresno State.

I don't see Texas losing; they're probably in the Championship game. Texas A&M is having a mediocre season and lost their last three; the rivalry between Texas and A&M will fire up the Aggies early on, but I think Texas is too strong and too hungry this season to fall to the Aggies. Texas then has the Big 12 Conference Championship game, against either Colorado or Iowa State. I'm hoping Iowa State; the Cyclones are playing pretty good football, they beat Colorado, and their three losses were close games. They might give Texas a bigger challenge than Colorado, who the Longhorns beat handily earlier this season.

As far as other one-loss teams, I'm a bit concerned about LSU leapfrogging the Lions in the BCS. LSU plays Arkansas this week, and then probably is in the SEC Championship game vs. Georgia; if they win out the rest of the way, there's a chance that strength of schedule might put LSU in front of Penn State, with the SEC championship game giving the Tigers one more quality win if they get there. Virginia Tech might be a threat to leapfrog the Lions, but I don't think strength of schedule will help the Hokies.

And keep in mind, even if USC or Texas would lose any of their remaining games; they might still have a strong enough computer ranking to stay in the Championship game, even with one loss.

Lions fans, just sit back and cross your fingers...

The Orange Bowl was the only committee to send two representatives to the game yesterday. I would put money on a Penn State vs. Notre Dame bowl matchup. That would be a great game for the network ratings, possibly rivaling the Rose Bowl, which might not get a large East coast viewing interest with Texas and USC.

I figured Fresno St would give USC a run for their money. Maybe a week off before meeting up with their neighborhood nemesis will find the Trojans flatfooted come December 3.

As far as computer ratings, VaTech and Oregon are the ones to watch. They won't overtake PSU, but they'll be closer.

As for LSU...the unbiased BCS computer might be enough to overcome last week's human poll bias of LSU #4 and PSU #5, but I don't know if it can overcome LSU #3 and PSU #4. We shall see. Since they play the SEC's little sisters of the poor, LSU's schedule is rated 62nd to PSU's 7th.

This is getting interestinger and interestinger.

For Texas, I'd say about 1% of a snowball's chance in hell. Even if Iowa State manages to pull off the northern division title, I doubt if they can handle Texas for more than 30 minutes. Unfortunately, there is only one team in the nation that can beat Texas: Penn State.

USC might get caught flatfooted playing their biggest rival after a week off. I doubt it. A lot of those guys will end up in the NFL out of sheer winning attitude. 1 in 10 shot.

I thought Fresno State was the last good chance for an upset. If not for a few late mistakes, it damn near happened.

It looks like Texas and USC in the Rose Bowl. Texas will score last to win the shootout.

Its funny, the last shot PSU had in 1994, they missed the championship game because they were Big 10 champs and locked into the Rose Bowl. This year, they won't get in because the BCS took the Rose Bowl away from the Big 10 champion.
