We were still riding the wave of our hit recording "Girl like you", so we thought we'd get to the show, hold our own and kick some butt.

holy sh*t dude i love kix. they are one of my favorite 80's bands. i was at that show it was awesome. i didnt know you played in the front. you guys kicked some serious ass to. i saw you guys at the first Q94 rock concert they had at the cresson sporstmens. long before end of summer jam. thats when the Q was still in cresson. i think i still have one of the fronts t-shirts. Thanks for the compliment man. We did OK, but Kix showed why they were a national act and why they were so popular. They killed that night.
I remember the Q94 concert at the Cresson Sportsmens club. That was alot of fun. I wish they still could pull that stuff off, but with the way things are now with sobriety checks and liquor control, those days are long gone. Do you have an orange Front t-shirt? That was what color most of them were. Heck, I don't even have one of them, just a few old Front records and some awesome memories....that's about it!

I remember at the Metron show with Kix and the Midnight Dynamite tour, they opened with the song Midnight Dynamite. Steve Whiteman came out and his microphone was a stick of dynamite with a lit fuse on the end of it. It was sooo cool and the song just rocked. They had that classic big fat sound with a giant kick drum that pushed enough air to blow out lighters 10 feet in front of the speakers. They all looked like rock stars, sounded great and kicked major butt. The first 3 rows of people in the front were all HOTT chicks. I bet they had a great time as well!

I'm younger than some of you, but I've been a fan of Kix since the first time I heard "Don't Close Your Eyes". It took that song for me to discover what at the time was some of their older material. I still enjoy their music to this day. My band opened for Funny Money in 04 and it was a great time. Steve Whiteman can still hit the notes that he was hitting 20 years ago.

BTW, nightcrawler_steve, I saw Shannon Larkin back in November when his band Another Animal opened for Alter Bridge. I've never seen anyone play drums like that. I'm a guitarist and I watched him the entire show.
Pour me another one, cause I'll never find the silver lining in this cloud.

I had an English teacher in high school who did security at a Kix show, and I guess the lead singer threw an empty beer bottle at his head. LOL

Do you mean the place just south of Cumberland MD in WV? That place was called "The Other Place". I saw some great bands there like Assassin, Snowmen, Wrathchild, The Shift, Dirty Deal, Blackmail, Gastem, Slammer, ... Bands never started there until after midnight and played until about 4 AM. Awesome place!

Now, if your talking of the clubs closer to Hagerstown in WV, there were a lot of shows at the Apollo Theatre in Martinsburg WV, and a small club called "The Bridge" that had bands. Those are the only I can think of right now.

I generally went to either the Old Mill, Mt. View, or Rabbits Foot. You couldn't go wrong at any of them. Every band in that area seemed to have arena-caliber shows.

Gatspy's! That's the place I'm thinkin of.

Yeah, those were some times, places and shows. I've been thinkin bout those times a lot tonight because I haven't thought of them in many, many years. There were tons of places to play, lots of great talented bands and players, lots of wild nights, drugs, antics and really good times. Some of the bands from back then we played with and or who were favourite: Wrathchild, Kix, Crack the Sky (ummm Donna), Never Never (the BEST Zepplin cover, not tribute, band EVER) Cracked Actor (Petra mmmm), Mona Lisa, Archer, Childs Play, Bad Attitude and more I know I'm forgetting.

I was also saddened because we lost some people way to young as a result of some of those excesses. Billy Jones comes to mind. I know there were others too who passed away or went astray. Our guitar player Scot Thornton, God rest his soul. That was a turning point and defining moment in my life. Things were never the same after that for me and I started down a different path. No regrets. I'm much more grateful for my abilities and opportunities to perform now, something I love with my every fiber.

I haven't thought about Scot in a long time. His picture is still on a dresser in my spare bedroom. There is truth to the saying: too much of a good thing can be dangerous.

313, I do believe that place was called "The Other Place" at one time. I remember a few guys from the previous generation talking about it. I'm a bit too young for it (wasn't legal until '00). I'm not sure when it became "Weekenders", but it's currently a titty bar. With rather lack-luster talent. :(

I've opened for Steve and FM twice, and he's been very genial and down to earth with me. I never detected a trace of Rock Legend arrogance. And he still hits the notes and performs like he did 25 years ago.

Yeah man, being a musician and kind of growing up in the scene, you get to see a different perspective of life than most people. I was playing at the Buckhorn Inn, now The White Lady tavern, back in 1979 about 1 week before New Years. It was packed and I was in a band called Axe with myself, John McKelvey on guitar and Denny Frank on bass. We were playing "Highway to Hell" and one of our friends and followers of the band, Harry Walters, was shot and killed right in front of us on the dance floor. It was surreal and everyone was running and ducking under tables and stuff. That incident really brought the darker side of the bar scene to the forefront and I'll never forget it. God bless Harry and his family. He was just at the wrong place at the wrong time. I know that wasn't an example of too much of a good thing gone bad, but it's a reminder that it can be a dangerous territory sometimes and you have to be careful. I hope I wasn't too much of a downer...just relating....

Gonna echo JP's comments. Funny Money seems to play a few shows down around the Harrisburg area if you're willing to travel.

I didn't know his brother Jason, but he was a great guitar player. I have his band Metropolis' album, from way back in 1980. The band was from Chambersburg, I believe.

Too bad that place isn't running bands anymore. It was always a good time there. There was another place further south from "The Other Place" called the Blue Beach Inn (or something similar). Do you know if it is still there? I saw a band called Deuce play there once (around 1981). The guitar player in Deuce was none other than Marty Friedman who went on to great things in bands Hawaii and Megadeth.

Hah! Yep! Jason was what I would call the "consummate" guitar player. Probably one of the best all-round guitar players, Ive ever know or had the blessing to play with. I put him in the same catagory as State College's Ted McCloskey. Guys you just shake your head at and wonder how they never "made it". Whatever the hell that means. I played with Jas for quite a few years. He is from Hagerstown. Chambersburg is my hometown. Relating to the Hendrix thread, Jas could seriously tear that shit up.

I wonder if you and I have crossed paths at some point in time? Some of the bands I played in back then were, Busload of Faith (DC/Frederick), Tribal Stew (Hagerstown/Cburg/WVA) and NV (Cburg/CD/Baltimore). Played in a couple of different house bands back then too.

That club I was thinking of was the Mountainview, though I've been to the Rabbit's Foot.
Oddly, the one place I've never been to is Hammerjack's. Jeez, EVERYBODY'S been there!--->JMS

I used to play there when it was Weekenders back in the mid 90's when I was with Razzamatazz. Now that was the place to play ooohh the memories. You would start at midnight and play till 4. It was the best place to play. Damn I miss it!

Now there was another big place called Visions out side of Keyser, WV.
It was before my time but from what I was told it was the biggest place to play. Then the name changed to The Stone House. Does anyone remember this place?

Should be pretty easy to catch Kix this year too..

They're playing about 6 shows in 2008....

I plan on going to the 9/12 show at JAXX in Springfield VA as I'm now living a few miles away from the place...

Tix are $30 the day of the show and they are looking for 4 local bands to open up so check out JAXX web site if you think your bands got the chops

I remember the band Busload of Faith, but never saw you. No doubt we have crossed paths in some of those MD clubs and at Shiley Acres. What a fantastic scene they had back then. For every band that made waves nationally (Face Dancer, Kix, Wrathchild, Childs Play, Cracked Actor, Bootcamp) there were 10 more that should have or could have done the same (Dagger, Mystic Force, Mannekin, Monarch, Snydly Crunch, Blackmail, Problem Child, Fell Danger, Intuition, Nasty Habit, Apollo Ra, Permanent Fixx, ...). Thanks for sharing your memories on some of this stuff!

Reading this thread brings back so many memories. First off, from what I've heard Steve's doing fine with Funny Money. It does kinda suck that they didn't start taking off until Dean Cramer left the band. I always thought Steve and Dean would make an awesome team, but Dean seems to be doing quite well with his new project.

I used to work with Steve at a little music store in Cumberland MD called Strings n Things. Steve came in from Hagerstown on Monday and Wednesday evenings to offer vocal lessons while I taught wide-eyed teens how to be the next guitar god. lol

I really wish there could be someway that I could contact him. Sadly, when he's in the area (usually at The Roadhouse Pub in Ft Ashby, WV) my band is usually play the same night. I would love to see him and catch up him. The couple years I knew him at the music store, he was an extremely approachable and down-to-guy... very much an anti-rock god!

Also remember Weekender's very well. Used to play there with a band called "Foul Play" who later became "Bottom Line". Back then I had hair too!

I just started working in the area (Fort Ashby) and actually looked at an apt across the street from what I was told was the Roundhouse (small place, no windows, just up from THE red light)????

So Funny Money is playing there next Sat? Cool... What are some other cool bands/bars in the area? I heard Steve actually grew up/ lives around here??

Any info would help get me up to speed on the area...

I did get some cool trivia that Lynndie England the chick from the Abu Grab photo scandal lives in the trailer next door... Think if I take the apt she'll take pics of me nakes smothered in butter? there's a vision...
