What is a level-headed post doing in this thread?

Really though, good post.

Bar Boycott

Post by metalchurch »

You are absolutely right, the original poster of this thread was not whining, they were making a very good statement about a legitimate concern. I was saying however, that the majority of complaints have been nothing less than whining and bitching. That's how I take this kind of thing. Everyone does have a right to react however they want.

WORD!... Like he said, same thing goes with car dealers...Everyone sooner or later got a bad deal and it's the dealers fault...Like he owned every car or like a club owner, was 100% responsible for everything that happens there.....It's not the bands/DJs fault either...When you have a LARGE following your bound to sooner or later get two people/families in the same room that don't like each other....add a little alcohol (liquid courage) and watch out! (Especially in Huntingdon County....LOL)

As always, I have to agree with the man wearing the kilt. In my experience playing around here locally, I've only met a very few number of club owners whom I've generally disliked, and that's usually because they were pulling shenigans to overtly screw my band out of money. Bands get cancelled; that's part of life. We had a gig cancelled earlier this summer. The Hurricanes have always had the ability to evolve and adapt anytime there's a change in the local venue situation, which is a hell of a lot more than I can say about some bands that I've seen, whose gigging careers have effectively ended once a club shuts its doors or cancels all of their shows. I don't advocate letting a club screw you over, but I also don't advocate trying to make an objective decision about a venue, club owner, or promoter over some dialogue on a message board when it's not even the participants involved who are making the claims. Bobby and Butch haven't publically gone into much detail, so I have to just take things how I read them; from that, I can't really take any side on the issue other than "that's the biz." Just my two cents on the matter.

BTW, we'll be playing our first Hitching Post show this Saturday. It should be capital time. Also, if I weren't playing a gig this Sunday, I would so be at Pellegrine's to see Splink! ;)

You know, you do have to admire the people who are passionate enough to boycott the club.

Ironically enough, I had a conversation with a buddy about this recently at . . . the Hitching Post. Having a cynical and hyper-practical viewpoint sometimes really sucks. I really don't care much anymore if my band breaks up, or a club dumps us, or my girlfriend dumps me, or I lose my job. There will be other bands, clubs, women, and jobs. But the side effect is that I don't have a terribly strong emotional attachment to any band, club, woman, or job. And that sucks.

So those of you who are passionate enough to boycott the club, more power to you. Consider yourself lucky to have the fire to do that.

Dirty Sanchez, I do believe you may have found your Vice Presidental candidate! :D

Dirty Sanchez and Jimi Hatt in '08!

Btw, for those who can make it over there, Felix and The Hurricanes ARE at Shaw's this Sunday night, aren't they??? Gee, maybe they'll have to find other tunes to play...I mean, Heaven knows their most excellent originals and covers work up those in attendance to the point they want to tear one another limb from limb! :)

Wow. My post was not intended to start a war. It was to show support for friends who help other friends, musicians, Bar Owners, the general public ( i.e. benefits etc). Shall I go on. To blame a band because their fans or bar patrons for starting fights is absurd. Thats like blaming the NFL for dog fighting. If you noticed my original post there was a series of question marks after the heading. I did not call for an all out boycott. If you care to continue patronizing the Post do so. My friends and I won't whore ourselves out to the selfless bullshit that goes on there. As far as legal issues, Mr. Watters made no malicious statements in his post. I have been at the HP many a nights and seen more than questionable activities. So to all who play there good luck and have fun, we will see you elsewhere. Also to attack a man that has the courage to put down the Turkey when he himself has demons is wrong. By the way I finally did see Echo Chamber at the HP you guys rock. Keep it up!!!!!! So flame me, not the Canes'.
I apologize to the Canes' and to all Bands that play there if I offended you.

Oh, I am in a band and no tears will be shed.

Thank you Nakedtwister for the kind words about Echo Chamber.

As for the Hitching Post, I have not seen any shady behavior there personally other than a minuscule incident when some woman offered to get us stoned. We politely declined. We have played 3 shows there to date without a fight. Butch has always done right by us and we intend on playing many more shows there. I think a boycott is out of order in this affair. IMO At the end of the day bands are temporary employees of the venue for the evening they are booked. If the boss wants to fire the help, thats his business. To boycott a venue that still has 4 or so shows a week is a good way to attempt to choke the neck of an already declining area music scene. I doubt it would be a successful boycott anyway.

If the boss fired your friend for on bullshit grounds, would you still work for him?

No right or wrong and both sides can be justified.
Personally, I'd walk out with my friend.

I think that's all the op was getting at, just a little venting.
And if that's the "boycott" he's calling for, I'm sure it will be very effective.

Yeah. My friend would have to understand that I have bills to pay. If he insisted that I choose between him and what I need to do, it'd be an even easier choice. That's all I'm saying on this issue right now.---->JMS

I'm a firm believer in not biting the hand that feeds you. The hitching post has always been great to us, through busy or slow nights, we've had a great relationship with them. I'm sure that there are a lot of other bands that can say the same thing. Unfortunate it is that things happen the way they do, but everything happens for a reason.

If Aldo's got rid of , i dunno (using examples here(dont know who all plays there)) Stuck In Kaos or FedUp, would everyone be on the bandwagon to boycott them? I wouldn't see that happening, reason being that Aldo's is one of the few places that supports original metal, well....The Hitching Post is one of the few places that has bands 4 times a week, and some of you are ready to boycott them because one band got canceled? Doesn't make sense to me.

What amazes me is that certain people on this board only participate in threads that have flame potential.

As far as biting the hand that feeds. So no club owner is my boss, if I wanted another job I'd go get one. I'm doing this for the fun and creative outlet. I like money too much to depend on music. Plus the healthcare benefits and retirement plan suck.

some people only feel the need to participate in threads that directly effect them. (a proposed boycot of a bar in which an upcoming show is already booked) or something they feel strongly about, not every thread on here.

The Hurricanes will be playing at Shaw's Bar sundays, not The Hitching Post. Its a schedule change, not the end of the world. Who do you think it hurts more?

If "your scene is your fans, not your bar" what the hell difference does it make where they play?

I know everyone loves kissing ass on here, but be careful while you're kissing the hurricane's asses this time, you're leaving many other cheeks cold and dry.

I'm a fan of many Bands, but yes, am an admitted major 'Caniac, and I can say that in the beginning, it does indeed hurt those who've enjoyed some of the most fun times EVER at the 'Post with their friends and the Hurricanes. As a matter of fact, my birthday this year is one I will remember for the rest of my life...well, most of it!

I hadn't been around the scene that long, but it still hurt me just as much as all the rest of you out there when Peter C's closed. Did we "get over" Peter C's closing? Many of us still say on here how much we miss it, so I believe the jury's out on that one. But I digress.

I believe standing by your principles is a very noble thing to do.

As for me...I've seen many Bands at the 'Post, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, :) and most likely will continue to do so, no matter how odd it'll feel at first to be in there and realize there will never be any more "Hurricane Sundays". It's a shame is all I have to say about it, but Shaw's is an awesome place too and as long as I can make it over there I'll "Keep On Rockin'"! :D

Btw, Echo Chamber, you guys DO kick major ass, best of luck to you!
