Weren't the original 5150 amps backwards engineered from Soldanos? Say what you want to say about Eddie, but I love his tone. I've never heard a Peavey in person that sounded like that, though.

It sure seems like it, right down to the clean/crunch switch on the first channel.

I could be wrong on this, but I think a key component of his Peavey-era tone was running in stereo using an Eventide Ultra-Harmonizer for chorusing. An evolution of the subtle Phase 90 swoosh of his earlier tone, maybe?

Plus, many guys lean toward the metal-ish preamp gain in the 5150. Which is great for thrashing out. But Eddie's tone is more of a "gain on half, melt the power tubes" thing.

Plus, most guys aren't Eddie Van Halen! :(

yeah most guys arent EVH, he as uniqe now as he was then, guys like him only come around once or twice in a genreation if your lucky, i hope this time in rehab helps him out ,and he gets his life in some kind of order.

what kind of rehab is he in anyway?

come on ed, get straightened out and write some more rockin tunes.

I once heard that Mick Mars of Motley Crue used an Eventide to a similar effect.

Eddie's a great player, no doubt. I wish he would releash some new quality music though instead of cashing in on VH's past glories. Balance was the last Van Halen album even worth mentioning.
