I've been thinking about the 8-11 or 9-12 thing for a long time. Personally, I would go out to see a lot more band and have the opportunity to sit in the back and yell Zepplin and Skynyrd at a lot more of your gigs.

I've even considered taking it one step further: A non-smoking, no alchol (and no PLCB harrasment) venue with a big dance floor and great lights and atomoshpere. The cover charge would cover some food and soft drinks or bottled water, and maybe some no-alcoholic cocktails and beer would be available, too. It would be for people who want to go out, dance have a good time w/o drunks and second-hand smoke.

I would have a D.J. on Friday nights and live bands Saturdays. Maybe Karaoke during the week. My band would love it since we're all non-smokers.

I'm trying to find a location and I've seriously thought about building a place. Did I mention a great house PA actually designed by real musicians?

I wanted to add this: When we played in Maine back 1980, all of the bars closed at Midnight, so we played from 9-12 or 8-11. We played at the Sheraton in Portland, and at King Henry's in Caribous. We had great crowds and got home at a decent time.

I think the no alcohol and no smoking thing is a bad idea. People go out to have a good time and get away from the stresses of life. To be honest, most people don't come to hear music. They come to get f'ed up and we all know that and have talked about that before...

How about this, Fedup dinner music at your favorite Bar and Grille.
I personally like playing late at night. I'm also quite a fucking weirdo though, in case nobody's noticed. But for real, drunk people kick ass and buy merchandise. I do however like bands playing earlier during the week. I saw the Rusty Gun Revival at the hitching post, had some ribs, acouple gin and tonics, and was home in bed by 12. That's usually my bed time anyways so it was great.

Gotta watch that it doesn't backfire with the clubs wanting us to start early and play to 2:00 like what RobtheDrummer is doing.

I love this thread!!!

I thought I was the only one who can't stand the "normal" hours for bands.

If we aren't playing or anything - I'm usually in bed between 10 & 10:30 at the latest on weekends. Sometimes I dread having to play because I know that it will be another 3am deal and usually I have to be up early for some reason or another.

It is the same reason that it was rare that anyone ever saw me going out to see other bands: Because they play to fucking late for my tired ass!!!! (of course now I have the other excuse since I became a daddy!)

Anyway - I really hope some venue owners read this thread and seriously consider changing the hours!!! The older I get, the more inclined I am to hanging up all this shit because my body just can't take it the way it used to.

Earlier Times....
I've been playing earlier time slots since I moved to florida...

Ernie's in Fort Lauderdale Fridays, 7-9pm
Tails Saturdays, 6 - 8 pm

Then when I moved to Myrtle Beach,

Greg's, Sunday 1 - 4 pm
Melons, Fridays, 8 - 11 pm

I haven't tried anything in Frederick, but the biggest challenge I had with Bar owners was the idea of promoting two things at once. A lot of times they wanted you to come on after happy hour to pull people to stay out longer.

I like the idea of earlier shows.
