need opinion on boss pedal

I use one,to me I lose a small amount of sustain but I can live with that. As far as tone loss,I don't really notice that at all,it does work well tho when it comes to quieting things up-I run it between the guitar and the front of my Randall V2.

I don't have any experience with that particular model, though I do believe that Dax (HF1/Lies, Inc.) has one on his pedal board. old sKool uses a rack-mounted Rocktron Hush unit, and he's very happy with it. Sound guys often comment that it's the most quiet rig they've ever heard.

IMO, if you run any amount of high gain, a noise gate is an absolute must. I hate the sound of a noisy rig. It's bad enough trying to deal with the dirty power in some of these clubs.

I never thought it has been an issue. Our rigs are noisy (white noise) but we are very select with chords and making sure our knobs and jacks are not doin that "Im broken" sound. We (The Embalmed) use no clean tone so its not an issue. However, with the active electronic pickups I recently have been using, I might need to add one to my pedalboard.

I agree w/ Lonewolf as far as using a Rocktron, they are cheaper and I think a better product. I use rackmount and w/ active pickups it makes the hum worse. My signal is preamped alot, and it's just the by product I have to live with for now.

Sometimes I have issues with dirty power at some of the clubs that we play at. A lot of the time the noise will go through my x-overs and into my horns, which is a major PITA. It's usually not a big deal, but I hate any and all extraneous noise coming from a guitar or bass rig.

1st time I heard a complaint about a Rocktron Hush product. This box has to go in the FX loop, after the preamp, to work right. Do you think he may have put it between his guitar and the amp's input? No noise suppressor is going to do much at the amp's input.

Yea,he put it out front. I run my noise suppressor out front and it works fine for me.

Scott, if you get some time, try putting your noise gate in your amp's FX loop (first in line) and play around with it like that for awhile and see if you like it.

I tried that and it helps a very small amount,but not like it does between the guitar and amp. When I have it out front,it gates the guitar real nice which works great for those tight galloped riffs or when there is that "dead" space( whether it's planned or not,lol!) I just bought this amp and haven't played out with it yet,so I'm kinda anxious to see how things work at a club environment with the NS cause I never really used one before. My Fender MetalHead had one built in,which was great,but it would have been a whole lot better if it was seperate from the built in effects.

I've been using that rack mounted Hush since about '90 or '91 and it's never failed. Wouldn't leave home without it. Doesn't hurt the tone enough to notice really. If you're running different levels at your amp (clean, dirty, high gain, etc) I found the best way to run it is so that it gates where you want it on your "softest" setting. When switching to high gain just roll off your volume when you're not playing and the gate kicks in. I'm really surprised how many people I see just standing there with the volume on the guitar wide open and their rig noisy as hell. Just rollin' off that volume when you're not playing makes a huge difference. Also your gate should be the last thing in line so it can quiet everything before it.

The "industry standard" is to place the noise gate after the preamp & EQ section but before modulation and delay effects like chorus and reverb.

This is the de facto location of the noise gate in every multi-FX processor that I have ever seen, including TC Electronic, Lexicon, Digitech, Roland, Boss, Korg, etc.
