Out of curiosity, I just did my own "show count" - tabulating the number of shows and bands/artists I saw in 2005.
For the "show" count, I counted all nightspot gigs, festivals, multi-band gigs, and other situations where live music was performed (i.e. "Crazy Fest," and a Pittsburgh Penguins game in December where the house band, "The Blue Line Band," was performing during intermissions).
For the band/artist count, I did my best to count each individual band/artist only once for the year, so the number I'm about to report is the number of DIFFERENT bands/artists I saw in 2005, not the grand total (including bands I saw multiple times during the year). My count also includes solo artists, plus national bands/artists I saw in 2005. Although I tried to be careful to count each band/artist once, there probably is a small margin of error here.
The numbers:
Total number of shows I saw/attended in 2005: 302
Total number of different bands/artists I witnessed in 2005: 267
Other statistics of note:
The band I saw the most times in 2005: Felix & the Hurricanes (33 times)
(Although I didn't count the number of times I saw them, runners up would be Gin & Juice/Plazma and In; I'm sure I saw each of these groups at least 10 times each in 2005.)
The most shows/events I did in one day in 2005 was five, which happened on September 24 (Ebensburg Potatofest, Thunder for Heather Motorcycle Run/Benefit, Jeff Showalter Memorial Motorcycle Run/Benefit, Tony Mollick Project at Burgi's Roundhouse, Browntown at 4D's Lounge).
I'm already off to a good start on 2006. Not counting New Year's Eve (I included that in the 2005 stats), I've already attended two shows and saw 4 bands/artists so far in 2006 (just on New Year's Day).
