Iron City Beer files for Chapter 11 ..

They filed last week. People must have figured out that they use water from the three rivers lol .. Actually, the underfunding of the pention plan and the 6 million back water bill they have forced them into it.

I only ever tried Iron City one time, it was terrible and tasted horrible. Had way to much of a matallic taste to it ..

Wonder how this will affect the other brands Pittsburgh Brewing Company produces? They make more than just their own brands. Maybe Ronnyd could fill us in with more specifics, but doesn't our Yuengling and even our Sam Adams come from PBC?

I'm more of an IPA guy. TJ and songsmith have witnessed the corruption that the mighty Hop Devil hath wrought upon Jimi.

no surrender, wouldn't really call yeugling 'dark' beer, nor can you use beer and healthy in the same sentence, haha. But good? Hop Devil rocks, also bought some Sierra Nevada Porter which I am enjoying. Yea, I think Sam Adams is made by PBC, the only decent beer they make IMO.

Damn!!! IC is in Chapter 11? What will happen when PNC pulls out for Boston and Mellon goes overseas in the next 7 years? I always said, Pittsburgh is just a big Johnstown (I've lived in both).

... and what happened to the big "concept merger" between IC and Alcoa (using the aluminum bottles) that was supposed to resurrect them both?

On a brighter note, Pepsi Company's market capitalization just beat Coke's this afternoon for the 1st time ever.

Iron City should have promoted more stuff like WFBG-Radio Disco Beer to supplement their revenues.

Don't be so sure. When I was in college (early 90s), we drank Yuengling exclusively because you could get 16oz returnables dirt cheap and it was sooooo good.

Then it started showing up on tap all over the place, the packaging changed a little bit, and it starting tasting a little less robust. And those awesome returnables went away! The distributer told us that the big Y had started subcontracting out because the Pottsville plant couldn't keep up with demand, and now they were able to greatly increase distribution. He said his Yuengling came from Pittsburgh now, and they only offered the 12oz NRs and cans.

We have a gig in Pottsville in January, and I'm looking forward to seeing if the Yuengling there is any different than what we get here. If it is, you can be sure there will be a few cases making the busride home!

EDIT: Okay, some simple research proves me probably wrong. Yuengling opened a major new brewery in Port Carbon, PA (just down the road from Pottsville) in 2001. They also have a facility in Tampa. They started really expanding their territories in 1992, which would have been when I heard the PBC info. Looks like I got:

Doesn' t taste much different in Pottsville......just a little fresher than it is anywhere else. If you get there make sure ya get the brewery tour, pretty cool.

When the current company president Richard L. Yuengling took over in 1985, the brewery reintroduced a lager the brewery had not made in decades to take advantage of a spike in lighter-style beers. Since this time, Yuengling Lager has become its flagship brand, accounting for 80% of production and much of its rapid growth. In the early 1990s, demand throughout Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware outstripped the existing brewery's abilities. In 1999, they increased their manufacturing capacity by purchasing a Stroh's plant in Tampa, Florida. In 2000, the company opened a second brewery in Pennsylvnia in Port Carbon in Schuylkill County. With production at the Port Carbon, Tampa, and original Pottsville plants, the brewery has been able to expand throughout the East Coast.

Those of you who are upset about IC Lite could always switch to straub .. It's made in St. Marries, Pa. YAK! it's about as bad as Iron City lol .. I think the worst four I ever had was Straub, IC Lite, Nickobaker, and Nanny Bow.

The top three with no comparison, in order:

Corona
Miller Lite
Bud Ice

Notable mention should be given to coors red lite. It was short lived, but man was it good ..

"The Brewery Tour", hahaha! The Hospital I was born in no longer exists, it was right around the corner from Mahantongo Street. I grew up in Schuylkill County, still have family there and I have yet to go on the tour! Just one of those things, I suppose. I know people from this area who have never been to the Horseshoe Curve.

I wondered when Lager started being made...all there used to be was their so called Yuengling Premium, YECK! Quarts of it were cheap, but it was so bad we used to say it was made from Schuylkill River water. Back then...well, let's just say the Schuylkill River wasn't very "clean". Yuengling's Black and Tan is decent, too.

It seems that everyone puts down the beer made locally. When we started beerdrinking in the N.E. Pa area, all everyone drank was Genesee beer. The regular beer, the lite, the ale, as long as it was Genesee.

When my friends from up state New York found that out, they laughed hard and of course called it piss water.

Scranton had 1 surviving brewery by the 70's called Gibbons beer (local commercial lasered into memory--"Gimme Gimme Gibbons") and whenever we found some out of towner actually keeping the stuff down, we sneered at them with the piss water look.

I guess its always better from somewhere else.

I remember as a kid Rolling Rock was super cheap and considered "alchoholic's beer," on a par with Red, White & Blue, and Old German. Then, in the 90's, yuppies in NY started drinking it... now it's up there with Beck's and Heineken. Go fig.
My buddy in Nashville, Doug Forshey, makes me bring a case of Yuengling Lager whenever I go down there. People just love it. Thankfully, now that there's a Florida brewery, they can get it, although it's still not that common. Now he makes me get Middleswarth BBQ chips.
I don't drink much, but I do enjoy a Yuengling occasionally.----->JMS

nother great local brew is yingling PORTER. there dark beer. nice mellow dark. not quite as robust as i like them i like em STRONG so most lite weights should like it. try it for a change of pace. get out on that edge once in while
