2006 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees named

Post by moxham123 »

The 2006 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees have been named.

Black Sabbath, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Blondie, The Sex Pistols, & Miles Davis

It is about time that Black Sabbath and Lynyrd Skynyrd made it in.

There are so many groups way more deserving than The Sex Pistols.

Sabbath and Skynyrd are OVERDUE, and Blondie was hot and the thing in the 80's, but I do not understand Miles Davis. He should be on the first ballot for the hall of fame for jazz, be-bop, and fusion but rock and roll??

Agreed, but Blondie? Do they REALLY belong? "To each their own." :) IMO, Miles Davis definitely belongs and The Sex Pistols were the definitive Punk Rockers.

Grimm,

I agree with you 100%. How can bands like Rush, Kansas, Jethro Tull, Deep Purple, and The Moody Blues, just to name a few, get bypassed for induction and The Sex Pistols (who only had one record) and Blondie make it in?

WHAT??? HOW can all of the above NOT be Inducted, yet FRIGGIN' "Blondie" is? I agree The Sex Pistols should NEVER be in ahead of ANY of the above listed Bands, no ifs, ands or buts about it! Except for, to my knowledge, The Moody Blues, aren't all of them still performing in some capacity or another? How is who is Inducted decided? Edit: Went to the Site and found the answer...it
figures, 700 International "experts". Thanks Moxham, either I'll catch them or set my VCR. 8)

Yankee Rose,

Yes, all of the those groups mentioned are still performing in some capacity, including The Moody Blues. There is a Moody Blues live in concert show on PBS Channel 13 this Friday, Dec. 9th from 9:00-11:00 p.m.

Sorry, YR, but I have to agree with No Surrender on this. The Sex Pistols are THE definitive punk band. They were (and John Lydon still is) what punk is all about. Modern punk is not even punk, it's pop.

If you want a punk education, there are a few seminal bands to check out: The Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Ramones, Dead Kennedys, Dead Milkmen, X, Buzzcocks, Bad Brains, New York Dolls, Pennywise, Black Flag, Misfits, and The Cramps. THAT's punk. Bands like Blink 182, Green Day, Bowling For Soup, or any of the modern bands are NOT punk at all.

:D Toona, didn't "I" say The Sex Pistols were the definitive Punk Rockers? :) Yes, they were important to the Genre, the leaders. Toona, you're clearly the expert, and I love the Clash big time, have great respect for The Ramones and like tunes by several Punk Rockers you listed. IMHO, I still think all of the Bands Moxham123 listed belong in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame way ahead of Blondie and The Sex Pistols. Just a "difference of opinion"...you know, "to each their own"...don't go getting all pissy on me again!

Seems like they kind of follow themes, don't they? There've been a lot of punk and new wave bands going in the last few years, with two more this year. Hopefully Black Sabbath will start a trend to some heavier acts, like Deep Purple and Alice Cooper. Priest or Maiden might be asking a bit much for now. :?

Maybe next year will be the year they finally start inducting prog bands. Hey, if the Red Sox can win the World Series, anything can happen.

The bands "Yes", "Emerson, Lake, & Palmer", and "King Crimson" are three more bands of super talented musicians that have been bypassed for many years and should be inducted. They were all the beginning of progressive rock.

Like most things like this, my guess is who gets inducted has a lot to do with music industry politics and pretentious album critics who work for companies like Rolling Stone, hence why bands/performers that may not seem deserving of the honor actually get the honor. That's why I have no interest in watching award shows: I just find it a bit pathetic to watch the music industry kiss its own ass and give awards based on how many units a particular artist moved that year.

Though I must admit that Miles Davis is an interesting choice. I can see the influence he had on Rock music since his Bitches Brew-era stuff helped introduce the world to John McLaughlin. Still, Mahavishnu Orchestra was more Fusion than Rock. Man, I still remember the first time I heard MO. It was a difficult listen, but well worth the effort. Open Country Joy is still one of my favorite Fusion/Jazz Rock songs of all time. But I digress.

have to agree strongly here with Moxham. I think a lot of the bands inducted had a lot of publicity during thier heyday. The above mentioned bands were not too controversial, hence not splashed on the cover of Rolling Stone mag. Now if Steve Howe got arrested as often as Sid and Johnny, they would already be in.

As far as starting the trend for punk, did we forget Iggy Pop?? He was jumping into crowds long before the Pistols and Ramones.

Again, I concur whole heartedly with Moxham123's additions and with UCJoe. Iggy Pop...my bro had him, in addition to the Clash, Ramones, etc. I recall Iggy appearing as if he needed a Transfusion or 2 and a good meal. :) What about The Kinks? What were they considered?

I think the Kinks are about as fundamental 3 chord Rock and Roll as you can get. They might be one of the most copied bands of all time.

I do not know if they are in the Hall of Fame, but they should be if the Stones and Who are in, and they are.

Are the Kinks the original punk rockers??

Actually, I was wondering the same thing when I very trepidatiously asked my silly little question. :D

Undercoverjoe,

The Kinks are in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. They were inducted in 1990. The Kinks and The Who both made it in the same year.

This website link lists all the artists who are currently inducted in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the year they went in.
