Electric violin player?

Post by RAM Z »

I was up late one night and while flipp'n through the channels I saw this kid, who was maybe 13 play'n a Viper electric violin. His name was Anthony something, I wish I could remember his last name but, I can't right now for the life of me, I think it started with an S though. He was on one of those most talented kids shows. I'm pretty sure it was on PAX but ,I could be wrong. If any one can find out who this little rocker is let me know. This kid was freak'n awsome, fire'n off some of the coolest shit I have ever heard! I wasn't even aware you could play a violin like he did! Any lead guitar could get into this kids skills! Any help or feed back would be great! 8)

I have a couple of CD's by Mark Wood, an electric violinist - this guy ripped! If there is such a thing as "violin shredding," this guy did it! I have to check to see if he is still putting out CD's, I haven't checked in a while...

Yeah man ! If ya have any links to it I would love to check em' out. This Anthony kid was the same way "shredmeister" for sure! Sometimes when ya think ya seen something cool and nothing can top it ,BAM along comes someone who takes an instrument and completely tears it up like nothing you have ever seen before. I'm a new fan of the electric violin for sure! 8)

I saw that kid a couple of times...on that show and another...He is very good and I was surprised to see the songs he picked for as young as he was.."All along the watch tower" and "Excuse while I kiss the sky" (Jimmy Hendricks)...his mom might be some influance, she looked like she'd been to the real Woodstock...It's good to see young people picking classic stuff and keeping it alive!.. He will be famous if he keeps rippin it out like that!

I found Mark Wood's website, www.markwoodmusic.com. It turns out he's into all kinds of stuff, including marketing his own line of violins. He toured with Celine Dion's band, and put out several albums (available through the website), plus he's currently playing on the Trans-Siberian Orchestra's East Coast dates, including tonight and tomorrow (Friday/Saturday) in Wilkes-Barre, Nov. 27-28 at the Giant Center in Hershey, Dec. 17 at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia, and Dec. 18 at Mellon Arena in Pittsburgh. I wouldn't mind checking one of those out!

There have been a few great rock violinists that not enough people paid attention to over the years.

Jean Luc Ponty had worked with Frank Zappa, Elton John and the Mahavishnu orchestra before moving decidedly to fusion and jazz work.

Papa John Creach with Jefferson Airplane/Starship had some notable work in the early 70s.

No rock violinist list would be complete without Robbie Steinhardt from Kansas. Most people just remember Carry On or Dust, but they have a lot of much more progressive music where he had some interesting violin work.

Once, I hired Kansas for an event, and I had the opportunity to meet Robbie's replacement, David Ragsdale. This guy has as many chops on guitar as on violin and would be considered a shredder.

On the cusp of country is Charlie Daniels...'nuff said.

There aren't many violinists in rock today, but there are plenty of kick ass fiddle players in modern country.

BTW, the technical term for shredder is "virtuoso".
...Oh, the freedom of the day that yielded to no rule or time...

Thanx J.P.
The Mark Wood site is great! Alot of people don't know much about TSO.
I've been a fan of them for awhile now and wouldn't mind see'n them live. I'm sure it would be an assult on the senses for sure. Every year around Christmas I put it in the stereo and make everyone listen. A great violinist, or mandolin, banjo player always gets my blood go'n! I 'm a super big fan of any stringed instrument. How about the double neck vilolin Mark Wood has in his grasp on his web site! One word "SICK"! 8)

lonewolf,

I'm also a big fan of Kansas. They have always rocked!

As for "Mr. Long Haired Countryboy" Charlie Daniels you got it right! It doesn't get much cooler than him!

Here are some more, very notable violinists and great bands to check out.

Seatrain. They had a hit song called 13 Questions and the electric violin solo uses a wah-wah. Great tune.

FM, a Canadian band.

Dixie Dregs. The outstanding, original lineup was Steve Morse (g), Allen Sloan (vln), Andy West (b), Rod Morgenstein (dr), Mark Parrish (keys). They later had these players - K T Lavitz - keyboards, Dave LaRue - bass, and Jerry Goodman (violin) from The Flock and Mahavishnu Orchestra

The Flock

UK. This band had some great players in the lineup - Terry Bozzio (drums), Bill Bruford (drums), Allan Holdsworth (guitar), Eddie Jobson (violin & keyboards), John Wetton (bass & vocals)
Eddie Jobson played violin with this band, Frank Zappa, did studio work with Jethro Tull, and has lots of great solo stuff.
