HOMEGROWN ROCKER 3/27/16 (ALLEGHENY UKULELE KOLLECTIVE)

Post by Jim Price »

Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the March 27 edition of 105.9 Qwik-Rock's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on Lion Country's Rock Station, 105.9 Qwik-Rock. The show can also be streamed via Qwik's website, www.1059qwikrock.com.

This week's program took a slightly different journey than usual. We spotlighted an instrument, the ukulele, and an upcoming event in April to celebrate the ukulele, the third annual Allegheny Ukulele Soiree (http://soiree.alleghenyukes.com). Thanks to several guests this week; Mike Holzer and Louise Troxell of the Allegheny Ukulele Kollective (http://alleghenyukes.com), who talked about the organization and the Soiree, and two guests who will be appearing at the Soiree, Gerald Ross (http://geraldross.com) and Mim of Mim's Ukes (http://mimsukes.com). We spotlighted some local and regional music that includes the ukulele, including tunes from Colin Coleman, Jason O, J.D. Eicher & the Goodnights, Whitey Noll w/Joe Agoglia, Joy Ike, Dani Hoy and Tony Halchak. And on top of all of that, we also gave away a ticket to Norman Nardini's upcoming concert at The Church in the Middle of the Block in Altoona! And we updated "Local Music News."

Here is this week's playlist:

HOUR ONE:

BEN DUMM & THE EAST SIDE BAND - "Devil's Debt"
MISS MELANIE & THE VALLEY RATS - "Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens" (live)
COLIN COLEMAN - "Imagine"
JASON O - "Maybe It's All the Same"
GERALD ROSS - "Take the A Train"
J.D. EICHER & THE GOODNIGHTS - "I'd Like to Get to Know You"
STUART FUCHS - "Buffalo in My Soul"
NORMAN NARDINI - "People Takin' Care"

HOUR TWO:

WHITEY NOLL w/JOE AGOGLIA - "Why A Gemini"
LIL' REV - "Ukulele Blues"
JOY IKE - "Happy"
DANI HOY - "Quiet Cove"
DANIELLE ATE THE SANDWICH - "Pet Store"
TONY HALCHAK - "Autumn Embers"

On our next program, we welcome musical guests Derek Mrdjenovich and Aaron Porta from Altoona-based rock group Walkney. Formerly known as The Big Time, Walkney is gearing up for a concert performance on April 9 at Altoona's Jaffa Shrine. We'll get into Walkney's story and preview the concert! Along the way, we will update "Local Music News," dig a "Local Music Flashback" from the archive, and review Joy Ike's All Or Nothing CD in "The Professor's CD Corner!"

Upcoming guests and specials include:

MAY 29 - Memorial Day Special

In Local Music News...

The group Bone Jacked has announced the addition of a new rhythm guitarist, Kevan Michael. Kevan hails from upstate New York.

The band Broken has announced a change in guitar players, as Chris Baker exits the group and Nathan Jones replaces him.

After going their separate ways last summer, Cambria County-based classic rockers Fuse have announced their reformation and return to stage action this summer. And a benefit concert event for local veterans is coming together for mid-May. The "True Patriots Project" benefit will take place on Sunday afternoon, May 15, at the U.S. Hotel in Hollidaysburg. Proceeds will benefit the Vietnam Veterans of America Blair County Chapter 967. The event will begin at 3 p.m., and will feature performances from Flight 19, Felix & the Hurricanes and Skye 2.0, with the Backyard Rockers performing on a second stage in between the other groups.
