Hello Everyone,
Here is the recap of the February 28 edition of 105.9 Qwik-Rock's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on Lion Country's Rock Station, 105.9 Qwik-Rock. The show can also be streamed via Qwik's website, www.1059qwikrock.com.
This week, we recapped the 20th annual Millennium Music Conference (www.musicconference.net), which happened the previous weekend (February 18-20) at the Best Western Premier, Central Hotel & Conference Center in Harrisburg. Millennium presented two days of music industry panels, seminars and mentoring, a trade show, a keynote speaker, and showcase performances on stages throughout the Harrisburg region by nearly 300 different bands and artists. The "Homegrown Rocker" was present during Millennium weekend, and we captured some audio from the conference. We presented comments by Millennium participants, and also aired excerpts from this year's keynote speaker, producer David Ivory (Halestorm, Patti LaBelle, Erykah Badu, The Roots). And we played tunes from some of the many showcasing bands and artists at Millennium. Along the way, we updated "Local Music News," and dug a live 1997 track from Korruption from the archive for this week's "Local Music Flashback!"

The Millennium Music Conference will continue to be the central thread of our next program. During the conference trade show, we invited showcasing Millennium bands and artists to submit their recordings in a "Homegrown Rocker" dropbox, and we randomly drew one recording at the end of the trade show; the creator of that recording won a guest interview and appearance on our next program! This year's lucky winner was Leamington, Ontario (Canada)-based singer and songwriter Kris Moauro! We will meet and learn about Kris, his career and music, and hear tracks from his first CD, Colours! Along the way, we will update "Local Music News," dig a song from a past band or artist from the archive for our "Local Music Flashback," and review JR Wolf's self-titled CD in "The Professor's CD Corner!"
Upcoming guests and specials include:
MARCH 13 - St. Patty's Day Special
MARCH 27 - Allegheny Ukulele Kollective
APRIL 3 - Walkney
(All dates are subject to changes as circumstances warrant.)

The area music scene lost a prominent friend and sound engineer this past week with the passing of "Big Jim" Dickson. Jim passed away on Monday, February 21, just shy of his 54th birthday. Jim ran sound for local, regional and even national bands and shows through the years, and operated his own sound production business, Shockwave Productions. He also was a professional wrestler for several years, as well as a race car driver who drove on several tracks in the area. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Jim's surviving family and friends.
Bassist Wes Fahringer has announced that he is stepping away from the group Mysterytrain after a two-year run. Wes plans to invest his energies in other projects.
Altoona-based heavy metal rockers Samara have a new drummer, as Jason Mosey has replaced Bob Brunner in the roster. Samara is working on new song material and a recording, and expects to return to live performing later this year.
Huntingdon County-based country favorite Chris Woodward has announced that he will issue a two-CD set in early May called Then and Now. The set will be a career retrospective, with the "Then" disc focusing on music from Woodward's first ten years, and the "Now" disc featuring more recent material. The expected release date is May 1.
And entries are now being accepted for the 2016 ninth annual Pennsylvania Heritage Songwriting Contest. Songwriters who have written songs about Pennsylvania, its heritage and history are invited to submit their songs to the contest, which is held in conjunction with the annual Smoked Country Jam Bluegrass Festival.
