Post by Jim Price »

Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the January 3 edition of 105.9 Qwik-Rock's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on Lion Country's Rock Station, 105.9 Qwik-Rock. The show can also be streamed via Qwik's website, www.1059qwikrock.com.

We spent the first program of 2016 emptying the mailboxes and checking out music from numerous new recordings that arrived during the holiday season. We debuted new songs from Darcie Miner, Sam Smith, Ted McCloskey, Morse Coda, Doug Irwin, Jonathan Monument, Triple Dose and Symbolon Obscura. We also updated "Local Music News," remembered the late Dale Nitti with a 2006 song from Hi-Tyde for this week's "Local Music Flashback," stepped "Across State Lines" to hear a song from Shepherdstown, West Virginia's Sunvine, and reviewed Jim Donovan's Sun King Warriors CD in "The Professor's CD Corner!"

In Local Music News...

As the old year ended and the New Year began, there have been changes on the area music scene.

Longtime Bedford County country performers Midnight Rodeo closed out their 20-year career, playing their final show on New Year's Eve. The group's career has included two studio albums and a busy performance schedule that took them throughout Pennsylvania, Maryland and West Virginia. Three members of Midnight Rodeo - singer Rick Zimmerman, guitarist/singer Mark Diehl and bassist Duane Sipe - are continuing on with a new band project called Remedy.

Area favorites Felix & the Hurricanes have welcomed back a familiar face, as Jeff Clapper has returned to the group to sing and play bass, replacing the musician who replaced him in late summer, Tony Mollick. Jeff helped the Hurricanes ring in the New Year on Thursday night at the Altoona Grand Hotel.

And the area music scene mourned the passing of Dale Nitti, the former singer for Cambria County-based party bands Hi-Tyde and Hardly Knew Her. Dale passed unexpectedly on December 18 at age 43. Dale was an established solo performer as well. The "Homegrown Rocker" extends condolences to Dale's family and friends.
