A Delusion...

Post by KeithReynolds »

is a belief held with strong conviction despite superior evidence to the contrary. As a pathology, it is distinct from a belief based on false or incomplete information, confabulation, dogma, illusion, or other effects of perception.

Delusions typically occur in the context of neurological or mental illness, although they are not tied to any particular disease and have been found to occur in the context of many pathological states (both physical and mental). However, they are of particular diagnostic importance in psychotic disorders including schizophrenia, paraphrenia, manic episodes of bipolar disorder, and psychotic depression

I record stuff. Have many things that ive done that I havent posted. Just no need to.
Not that it matters, but Max and I are working on a song. Ive recorded and produced beats for rappers. I have my own stuff ive worked on here and there. I do work on music at times. Just dont feel that overwhelming need to show it off. Certainly not because im not proud, but because I am simply indifferent to the whole thing.

I think the term "delusion" is difficult to apply and very often mis- or over-used because the notion of "superior evidence to the contrary" is largely open to interpretation.

For instance, many people would claim that someone who holds the belief that Lee Harvey Oswald did not act alone in assinating President Kennedy is delusional. After all, evidence was examined and reviewed by experts and various investigational entities, so we can say that we have "superior evidence" indicating that it was Oswald.

Compulsion is an irresistible impulse to act, regardless of the rationality of the motivation.

I thought you were going to invoke your inner Foucault here and state that big T Truth is controlled by those in power, but you veered to the side and pulled out some Karl Popper and gave a post-positivist response. Very nice, Mr. Jason. Very nice.

Thanks. It was actually sort of a round about jab at Richard Dawkins, but I'll take whatever points I can get.

Never read The God Delusion. I thumbed through it at a bookstore and found it to simply be a collection of ad hominem jabs at believers. I have no problems with philosophical positions arguing against religion or the existence of a deity, but Dawkins is clearly a poor man's Hume in that regard.
