Post by Jim Price »

Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the April 28 edition of Rocky 104.9 and Rocky 99's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WRKY-FM (www.rocky1049.com) and WRKW-FM (www.rocky99.com).

Thanks to this week’s guest, area country favorites Chris Woodward and ShinDiggin!’ We met the current edition of the band and learned their story, discussed their music, and heard tracks from their latest CD, Git Your Shindig On! And the group brought instruments and played a couple of songs live for us on the air! Along the way, we debuted new songs from Mycenea Worley, Ceann, Rising Regina and Borrowed Time. We also updated “Local Music News,” dug a 1991 song by Donny Burns & the Sharp Turns from the archive for this week’s “Local Music Flashback,” and reviewed Sterling Koch’s Let It Slide CD in “The Professor’s CD Corner!”

In Local Music News…

Kicking off with a special prerecorded greeting and words of encouragement from Lzzy and Arejay Hale of Halestorm, the 23rd annual Crazy Fest Amateur Youth Talent Show took place earlier this afternoon at the Greenwood Firehall in Altoona, as area youngsters under the age of 21 displayed their musical, singing, dancing and other talents while competing for a large number of trophies and other awards. When the dust settled at the end of the event, Crazy Fest organizer and emcee Dennie Huber announced the winners. Guitarist Dylan McNelley of Altoona took top honors in the age 10 and under category with his acoustic rendition of Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven.” In the age 12 category, singer Alivia Jacobs of Altoona won for her performance of the song “Baby Face.” In the 13-year-old group, Stevie Moses of Hollidaysburg won first place for his guitar and vocal performance. The age 14-15 division went to newcomer Spencer Korman of Huntingdon, who dazzled the crowd with his piano virtuosity on a ragtime-era number. And in the 17 and older group, De-Jay Dunio of Altoona’s singing performance won him top honors. In the group and duo category, the Dunio Family Singers took home the gold, and in the rock band division, Refuge captured top honors. In other awards handed out this afternoon, Dylan McNelley won the “Future Star” award for ages 13 and under, while singer Shannon Barnes of Hollidaysburg won “Future Star” for ages 14 to 21. Determined by audience votes, the Fan Favorite-Male award went to Spencer Korman, while Fan Favorite-Female went to young violinist Cammie Myers of Gallitzin. The Most Original Performer Award went to a ventriloquist named Ian. Crazy Fest Outstanding Awards went to Delaney and Danelle Dumm for Outstanding Variety Act, Shannon Barnes for Outstanding Female Vocal, De-Jay Dunio for Outstanding Male Vocal, Lexi Quintero for Outstanding Senior Dancer, her sister Cassandra Quintero for Outstanding Junior Dancer, Chelsea Moses for Outstanding Female Musician, and Spencer Korman for Outstanding Male Musician. Dennie Huber thanks all the contestants and their families, the sponsors, Jack Servello for running sound, and the Greenwood Volunteer Fire Company for the venue and all their help.

A new album paying tribute to Patrick Halloran, singer for Pittsburgh Celtic-rock group Ceann who died in a 2011 traffic accident, has been completed. Organized by his brother and bandmate Brian Halloran, The Legend of Handsome Pat features songs that Pat wrote, performed by such names as Scythian, Icewagon Flu, The Fighting Jamesons, The Havers, Paul Tabachneck, Cruel Seamus, The Hang Lows, the remaining members of Ceann and more. The album can be obtained through Brian Halloran’s page on Bandcamp.com.
