HOMEGROWN ROCKER 1/20/13 (WINE OF NAILS)

Post by Jim Price »

Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the January 20 edition of Rocky 104.9 and Rocky 99's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WRKY-FM (www.rocky1049.com) and WRKW-FM (www.rocky99.com).

Thanks to our guests this week, area music adventurers Wine Of Nails (www.facebook.com/wineofnails). We got reacquainted with the current edition of Wine Of Nails and their musical mission, and previewed new tracks from the group’s new album, WONk Thyself. (And Dom Peruso didn’t drop any Bea Arthur blasts this time!) Along the way, we debuted a new song by Michi, updated “Local Music News,” dug a 2003 song by The Grimm from the archive for a “Local Music Flashback,” and reviewed Look Left’s Bite the Green Apple CD in “The Professor’s CD Corner!”

Here is this week's playlist:

HOUR ONE:

GROUND RESONANCE – “Say”
MATT WAGNER – “You Never Know”
WINE OF NAILS – “The Blight of the Emerald Isle”
MICHI – “Standstill”
WINE OF NAILS – “Eleuthera”
CHRIS VIPOND & THE STANLEY STREET BAND – “Escape”
WINE OF NAILS – “Enygma”

HOUR TWO:

WITHOUT ZERB – “Last Goodbye”
WINE OF NAILS – “Dibattito”
LOOK LEFT – “Waiting to Die”
WINE OF NAILS – “Fit Right In”
THE GRIMM – “Raise the Line” (2003, Local Music Flashback)
WINE OF NAILS – “I Walk Alone”

On our next program, in honor of seemingly half the populace of our region (including the show host) battling some form of throat malady, we give the area music scene’s vocal cords a rest and present the “Instruments Do the Talking” Special! We will spotlight instrumental creativity and prowess with 2 hours of instrumentals from local and regional bands and artists! We will also update “Local Music News,” dig a song from the archive for another “Local Music Flashback,” and review Wine Of Nails’ WONk Thyself CD in “The Professor’s CD Corner!” Instruments do the talking on the “Homegrown Rocker” next Sunday night!

Upcoming guests and specials include:

FEB. 3 – FOOTBALL WIDOW’S SPECIAL; LADIES OF LOCAL MUSIC
FEB. 10 – RON RUSSELL TALENT SHOWCASE
FEB. 24 – MILLENNIUM MUSIC CONFERENCE RECAP SPECIAL
MAR. 3 – MILLENNIUM MUSIC CONFERENCE CONTEST WINNER
MAR. 17 – ST. PATTY’S DAY SPECIAL
MAY 19 – “DAY OF ROCK” PREVIEW

In Local Music News…

Pure Cane Sugar, Ted & the Hi-Fi’s, Miss Melanie & the Valley Rats are just a few of the acts slated to perform during the benefit show “BeCAUSE the Night: A Celebration of Women in Rock,” which will happen at the State Theatre in State College next Saturday night, January 26, for the benefit of Easter Seals of Central PA. Also making an appearance will be Erin Condo & the Hoofties; Jason McIntyre and Junior Tutwiler; Jerry Zolten & Richard Sleigh, Chris Vipond and the Stanley Street Band, folk and blues artist Hannah Bingman, the Hot Mamas and the Nightcrawlers. A limited number of tickets to that event are still available and can be purchased at the State Theatre box office.

Pittsburgh surf-rock trio The Turbosonics are set to release their self-titled debut CD, and will present three different CD-release shows starting next weekend. The first will be at Pittsburgh’s 31st Street Pub next Saturday, January 26.

The area music scene mourned the loss of two musicians during the past couple of weeks. Johnstown native and former area musician Chris Brailler passed away after a brief illness on January 12 at the age of 42 in his home area of Houston. Chris played guitar and sang with several Johnstown area bands including Primer Lime.

And Damian Falcho passed away on January 8 at age 49 from diabetes-related causes. Damian played drums with a number of area bands, including Wayward Son, T-Minus and more. We at the “Homegrown Rocker” send our heartfelt condolences to the families, friends and musical associates of both men.
