Silvertone 1457

Post by Jasaoke »

A friend of mine recently came into a Sears Silvertone 1457 guitar amplifier. From the research I've done, the 1457 was the amp-in-case but what he has is different. I would call it a "suitcase model" as opposed to the guitar case model. Problem is, I can't find any information on this type. I have come to believe that this amp was pulled from the guitar case and fit into another housing. If this is the case, they did a GREAT job; Tolex, nice (funky) grill.

So, I guess my question is: Did Sears Silvertone make a 1457 amp that was NOT part of a guitar case?

I've heard of this, but couldn't find anything online about it, either. I know the Silvertone amp-in-case is slowly coming into it's own... the guitars (Danelectro-made) have been sought after since the early-90's, but people didn't feel the same about the amps. Only over the last few years have people figured out how funky and different they sound... surprisingly thick, and detailed, for a cheap novelty amp.
When I think of all the old cheapo tube-amps I've junked or ignored, I get wistful. Supro's, Silvertones, a Kalamazoo Model One, even a Blackface Fender Deluxe Reverb I gave Jim Mosey because it needed repairs I couldn't do.
Sigh.

How similar is it to the Silvertone 1472 and 1482 amps? Those are really groovy! And the cabinet is a glorified cardboard box, so they weigh next to nothing.

Have you checked out the Fender Pawn Shop amps? I like the Excelsior. They did a nice job. It's not a cheap amp that's a poor imitation of a better amp, it's a cheap amp with a sound of its own.
Back in black, I need a snack...

At this point, I'm pretty well convinced that this was a DIY mod from the guitar model. The amp says "Guitar and Amplifier" on the back of it.

It's a bit different than the 1472 or 1482. We might just fire it up this week...
