Dave Brubeck

Post by Hannibal »

I had the delight of seeing the Dave Brubeck Quartet and the Ramsey Lewis Trio in concert at Penn State last year. I first saw Brubeck, and got my first introduction to Jazz, at Penn State Rec Hall. I was a Penn State freshman then, fall semester, 1965. I have Take Five on both vinyl and CD. They both have been played a lot over the years. Proud to say my son has "Blue Rondo A La Turk for a ring tone on his cell. I will miss him, but we will always have his music.
I love it when a plan comes together.

Time Out has always been one of my favorite jazz records. I have it on CD, but the sound quality is very much that of good vinyl. The entire album is really a study in odd time signatures (and of course, Paul Desmond's awesome sax playing). Dave Brubeck was definitely an innovator with his own unique voice. Before the West Coast/Cool thing really took hold with Miles, the bop players were trying to push the envelope with crazy phrasing and complex melodies, but the West Coast scene, of which Brubeck was a part, focused on recognizable melodies and just creating a vibe.
"He's the electric horseman, you better back off!" - old sKool making a reference to the culturally relevant 1979 film.

I was there too ! Dick Vaught and I went. Great show ! Take Five, one of my favorites. Managed to do odd times WITHOUT making it sound forced. Of course another favorite, Joe Morello was on drums on that album !
