HOMEGROWN ROCKER 7/29/12

Post by Jim Price »

Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the July 29 edition of Rocky 104.9 and Rocky 99's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WRKY-FM (www.rocky1049.com) and WRKW-FM (www.rocky99.com).

This week, we again took the opportunity to empty the “Homegrown Rocker” mailboxes to explore some new recordings that have arrived in recent weeks. Once again, the result was maximum new local and regional music; as we debuted tracks from Without Zerb, Little Buddy, Jason O, John “JT” Thompson, Jonah Whale, Bloodshot, Graces Downfall, Where the Truth Lies and Big Atlantic. We updated “Local Music News,” and with the news of the passing of Marty “Scrap” Tagliati, we honored Marty’s memory with a 2007 song by Marty’s band, The Scraps, for this week’s “Local Music Flashback.” We also stepped “Across State Lines” to hear a song from Baltimore’s SilverTung, and reviewed Ted McCloskey’s The Last of the Pin-Up Girls CD in “The Professor’s CD Corner.”

Here is this week's playlist:

HOUR ONE:

GROUND RESONANCE – “Say”
SYLEX – “I’m Not Dead”
WITHOUT ZERB – “Last Goodbye”
THE WHATLEYS – “Whiskey and Failure”
LITTLE BUDDY – “Now I Run”
BLACK COFFEE – “Bottom of the Barrel”
JASON O – “That Is Okay”
MY HERO ZERO – “Make Some Noise”
JOHN “JT” THOMPSON – “Why Can’t You Be True?”
JEFFREY GAINES – “Scares Me More” (live)

HOUR TWO:

HYBRID ICE – “Find Another Day”
SPINEBELT – “Lotus Under Glass”
JONAH WHALE – “I Can Only Imagine”
TED McCLOSKEY – “Lost in Flourescence”
JONATHAN OSMAN/BLOODSHOT – “Hurt & Bleed”
THE SCRAPS – “You’re the Only One” (2007, Local Music Flashback)
SILVERTUNG – “I Am” (Across State Lines)
GRACES DOWNFALL – “Scapegoat”
WHERE THE TRUTH LIES – “Not Forgotten”
NINETAIL – “Half Truths and Hand Grenades”
BIG ATLANTIC – “Luminosity”
SOUND OF SILENCE – “Can’t Find It”

On our next show, we expect to showcase live performances by area bands and artists in another installment of the “Local Music Live in Concert Special!” We’ll hear area bands and artists doing their thing live on venue and concert stages. Along the way, we will update “Local Music News,” dig into the archive for a live performance “Local Music Flashback,” and review the Doug McMinn Blues Band’s Live CD in “The Professor’s CD Corner!” “Local Music Live in Concert” on the “Homegrown Rocker,” next Sunday night!

Upcoming guests and specials include:

NOTE: We are approaching the time of the year when the Pittsburgh Steelers hit the gridiron again. Since both Rocky 104.9 and Rocky 99 broadcast Steelers football, the “Homegrown Rocker” will again change its air time once the regular season begins. The show will air from 9 to 11 p.m. starting on Sunday, September 16, and will air at this time each Sunday night through the duration of the Steelers’ season. Hopefully, that will be through February 3, the date of Super Bowl XLVII in New Orleans!

In Local Music News…

The area music scene was saddened this past week with the passing of Marty Tagliati on Wednesday at age 31 following an extended illness. Marty was known on Altoona area stages as Marty “Scrap,” the singer and guitarist with Altoona punk trio The Scraps. We at the “Homegrown Rocker” extend our sincerest condolences to Marty’s surviving family, friends and musical colleagues.

A benefit concert to battle cancer is coming together for late next month at Altoona’s Railroaders Museum. ProCare Therapy and Fitness is presenting the Striking Chords Against Cancer Benefit concert on Sunday, August 26, with proceeds going to the American Cancer Society. The concert will begin at 1 p.m., and will feature performances from a variety of area bands and solo performers. Providing the music that day will be Drew Dodson, The Felons, Travis Singer, The Hope Fallacy, Ryan Matthew, The Good Seeds, Jackson Monsour, Chris Vipond & the Stanley Street Band, Matt Wagner, Felix & the Hurricanes, Pat McGinnis and Hair Force One. Tickets are $20, and can be purchased at the Railroaders Museum and several area businesses.

And two more performers have been added to the slate for next weekend’s AmeriServ Flood City Music Festival in Johnstown. Aspiring New York-based 13-year-old rock/pop singer and songwriter Charlie Dane will perform on Saturday afternoon, and blues guitarist Anson Funderburgh will join Eric Lindell during his performances on Friday evening and Saturday. The Flood City Music Festival runs from Friday night through Sunday. For more information about the Festival and the schedule of performers, visit the website www.floodcitymusic.com.
