I definitely agree with both of you. Drummers especially need to not solo, I think it falls in the same category.
I'd never thought about it quite that way before, but he's got a great point.

I may not take after his style(most people can't), but I have tried to apply some of his philosophy to my playing.

I've also heard him say, "Less is More." Everybody could learn from that.

Personally, I love bass solos (and drum solos too). If I'm hearing the bassist (or the drummer) in the pocket grooving all night, I actually want to hear him or her step out and do something a little less "groove" oriented during a solo. Are our attention spans so debased that we can't stand to have someone not constantly delineating the 2 & the 4 for the relatively short duration of a solo? Are the rest of the bands' fingers broken? Why can't the rest of the band comp a little bit behind the bassist to keep it moving? I love and respect Vic, but man, that kinda thinking really underscores a saddening commentary upon our state of being as music listeners.

I don't think anyone has the right to tell anyone what they should do musically, it should be up to the person playing.

I went to see Gov't Mule, being a huge fan of guitar legend Warren Haynes. I came away in awe of the drum solo by Matt Abts. It was just incredible and now I pay attention to the drummer more in live music.

And to the great bass players in this area, play on and go for it whenever you take a solo. I will be there listening and enjoying.

simple, because you don't use a pick to place every note. and you only have FOUR strings..how can you%$#@ that up?plus you don't lean way back when you play like lead guitar.thats sooo coola move!).bass players bend forward ...and your in the back...in front of drummer but stilll.borrring hpw important can you be if they put you in the back ...

I personally would love to see some of the many talented players in the area take some solos at times. Most of them could be playing a one stringed Bass or a trash can and amaze you. Actually some could string Axel Rose to a broom stick and go YO-Yo on his ass.
