Hello Everyone,
Here is the recap of the March 18 edition of Rocky 104.9 and Rocky 99's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WRKY-FM (www.rocky1049.com) and WRKW-FM (www.rocky99.com).
This week, we weren’t quite ready to stop our St. Patrick’s Day celebrating yet. We designated this week’s show the “St. Patty’s Special,” and celebrated area bands and artists who specialize in Irish-flavored music. We were also joined by one such band, Full Kilt (http://fullkilt.weebly.com/). We discussed the latest Full Kilt happenings, and heard tracks from their latest CD, Come Have a Drink with the Band. Along the way, we paid homage to Pittsburgh Celtic rockers Ceann with a double-shot of their tunes; Ceann’s singer, Patrick Halloran, died last year in an auto accident. We also celebrated the memory of Dan Myers with an a cappella song he performed in 2004 with the Irish Ramblers for a “Local Music Flashback.” In addition, we debuted new songs from Kilmaine Saints and Ashes For Trees, updated “Local Music News,” and reviewed Tree the Band’s Wild Rover CD in “The Professor’s CD Corner.”

In Local Music News…
Plans are coming together locally for a centennial celebration of the birth of legendary singer and songwriter Woody Guthrie, with events to be staged both at Penn State’s University Park campus and Penn State Altoona. Part of a series of celebrations worldwide, the “Woody at 100” Centennial will take place during the weekend of September 7-9. Some of the featured highlights will be musical performances throughout the weekend, including the “This Land Is Your Land Concert” at Penn State’s Eisenhower Auditorium on September 8 featuring John Mellencamp, Arlo Guthrie and other performers to be named. For more information about the celebration, visit the website www.woody100.com.
Penn State is accepting written papers about Woody Guthrie and his legacy for the conference. The deadline for entries is April 1. Papers may address any aspect of Guthrie’s legacy and influence, including folk music, art, literature, rhetoric, philosophy, media studies, politics, culture, the work of the many writers, artists, and musicians
whom Guthrie inspired and influenced, and more. Anyone interested in submitting a paper may email 200-word abstracts to: woodyguthrie.psu.conference@gmail.com.
The date has been announced for this year’s 22nd annual Crazy Fest Amateur Youth Talent Show. This year’s Crazy Fest will happen on Sunday afternoon, April 29, at 1 p.m. at the Greenwood Firehall in Altoona. Organized and hosted by Dennie Huber, Crazy Fest gives youngsters up to 21 years old the opportunity to show their talents on stage before a friendly and supportive audience. Any talent is welcome, from singing and music to dancing, acting, magic, and more. Youngsters may compete free of charge, and may register or obtain an application by calling Dennie Huber at (814) 942-2516. Admission for the general public is $2 at the door; proceeds fund the trophies and awards handed out to the youngsters at the end of the competition, and food sale proceeds benefit the Greenwood Volunteer Fire Company.
Two area bands have announced changes behind their drum kits. Altoona’s Triple Threat has a new drummer, as former Hawks drum man Bill Hocherl takes over behind the kit. And Cambria County classic rockers Fuse have named John Tedeski as the new man behind their drum kit.
Shades Of June has parted ways with guitarist Alex Davis. The group plans to continue on.
