Anyone ever build a guitar or Bass?

Post by TheBMC »

Just looking for tips and tricks... I am going to build a bass and I have a friend who is going to build a guitar but I know absolutely NOTHING about it yet.... I'm going to do some research, maybe start with a kit guitar first then do one from scratch. depending on how the kit goes..

thanks!

Build as in buy a neck, precut body, and hardware then assemble it?

or build as in cut a body, route, sand, etc?

My best advice is to make sure the neck lines up and is located at the proper position given the scale.

... Both actually. I want to start with a precut kit so I can understand it all more without adding the complexity of getting it all cut correctly...

but once I get a kit put together I would like to build one completely from scratch. Baby steps I guess.

Thanks for the tip!

I bought a "60's" Vox neck off ebay and made a Vox Phantom shape body from a piece of poplar that I had cut with a chainsaw 15 years earlier so it was nice and dry. I cut it in strips about 1 1/2 inches wide and glued it together with Elmer's glue . I thought that laminating it would help keep it from warping but Paul of "Bighead Guitars" said that it wasn't nessacery. I used a router to cut out the place to bolt on the neck and routed out spaces to mount the pick-ups and electronics. Bought a piece of white plastic for a pick guard, a Rickenbacker toggel switch, 2 Seymour Duncun bass pick-ups and bought 2 vintage Vox knobs off ebay. I bought a "Fender" vintage style bass bridge.
