U2 and IPOD
I am curious what you guys think about this whole thing with U2 and Ipod. I am not a fan of corprate sponsorship but I don't know, the whole idea of having Apple pay for your advertising is inticing.
I am sure that a lot of you have seen the commercail with "Vertigo" and the Ipod.
What do you think "Cool Idea" or "Sellout" ?

20 years ago, I'd scream SELLOUT!
With all the technology and instant communications going on today, its a matter of survival. With technology, you either follow, lead, or get out of the way. I think we know what category Bono fits into.

...Oh, the freedom of the day that yielded to no rule or time...
I hate U2 - their music sucks!

I'm indifferent to the whole thing. U2 have been making music ABOUT mass media and technology for a long time now, much of it tongue-in-cheek. So if you turn on your TV and have Bono sticking his crotch in your face, at least part of it is them saying, "hey check this out, we're a bunch of homely dorks, but the multinational corporations let us ride them like a surfboard! See how foolish they are?"
There's something cool about selling out and being completely aware of it. Like when the Sex Pistols did their reunion tours and would hold a press conference to literally say, "we're only doing this because a bunch of guys in suits offered us a pile of money. But you idiots will buy tickets anyway." That's some serious snotty punk attitude for ya.
As opposed to the whole "I'm really cute and have my video plastered all over TRL, but I'm a really serious artist and totally credible because they let me offer some suggestions when the company wrote the song for me" crew.

It is the music business. It's also U2's music and they can do with it whatever they wish (well, as long as there aren't any contracts limiting what they can do, but you know what I mean
).
All of this talk about "selling-out" is daft, anyways. Who cares about some primitive social concept like that? I've always said that "integrity" is just as superficial as "selling-out"; you're just indentifying yourself with a meaningless label either way you look at it. The music industry is a comprimise. If you're a musician and you want to play some place other than your basement/garage, you are going to have to make some kind of comprimise along the way. It's not selling-out; it's making progress.
Besides, why do so many people confuse an artist's personal values with their music? I buy music if I like it. I don't try to impose any kind of personal value system upon it. I don't care if an artist put a ballad on an album just to sell it, or appeared on TV to plug their new single. I don't care if they support liberal causes or donated $100k to the Republican Party. I'm not going to limit myself from music I like over things like that.
I'm sure that U2 also saw the commercial as an opportunity to promote their album. I didn't know they had a new album until I saw the commercial.

Agreed...JayBird wrote:I hate U2 - their music sucks!
I was only saying sell out...I have not the faintest idea what U2 is about and really don't know any of their songs but that stupid one on that commercial....I've always thought Bono sang out of tune but, it's probably just my preference in intervals and such...
If youth knew; if age could.
If your band is based upon the trend as U2 was in the beginning and thats what you've alsways done then no that does not make you a sellout. If you are the rebel band and against corporate america and the music trends etc and you take a deal like this then you are a sellout.
So if you preached against corporate music etc and all the sudden are offered a million dollar commercial deal do you pass it up to maintain dignity or take the money ? Hmmmmm
And what bands with sponsorships like Jagermeister, guitar center etc I don't think that makes them a sellout but I don't see anything different about it than this.

Don't bitch to me about the economy while you're still buying Chinese products.
