So hard to name a band these days
So hard to name a band these days
I just found out last night at practice that Descension is taken by a band in Kentucky that has been together for a long time. I even spelled the name wrong on purpose! Strange why it didn't show up when I searched for it.
Back to the drawing board, I guess. I really hate naming bands...

When you think about it, there's millions of bands out there... Chances are, just about every cool band name you can think of has been taken and used several times by now by different bands/groups that may no longer be together already, or maybe they just play in some other state/country. This is ESPECIALLY true for the one word band names.
Unless they're a generally famous band with a trademarked name, or unless they play in the same geographic area you reside (meaning your fan bases could get confused), then I don't see that much of a problem with using a name that's taken.
It's more than likely that neither of your bands will get big enough to ever make a difference. And I'm not saying that you're not talented - just that it's extremely hard to make it big in music...
Personally, I do a google search and then make sure I can get a myspace page or website with the band name. But that does make it tough sometimes.
So, In my opinion, if a band sharing your band name plays in kentucky...who gives a fluck.

Having to come up with a name does suck. Luckily, you're not changing it after hard gigging. From Wrench to Stept On and from Backstreet Law to 'Til December, it sucks changing your name after becoming known for that name. The branding of your project is tied to its name. Personally, I'm not a fan of purposefully misspelled band names, unless the misspelling is truly clever. Nine times out of ten, it isn't.
I like Ryan's idea about the acid.

This website takes whatever word or words you type into the field and creates band names. Try it out.

Tonight: The Embalmed featuring Skrote.

I tried a few of those name generator sites & couldn't come up with anything the entire band liked. It's hard to get 5 guys to agree on something, we are kinda like women that way, haha
