Who pays?

Post by GUITARII »

Okay.... you're out with the band, playing a benefit for a family that lost their husband/daddy.... donating your time and another band shows up and asks to play because one of their daddy's is there.... Do you let them?

Say you let 'em so you and the others can take a break and after two or three songs the music stops.... you head back to find the other band gone. You pick up the guitar to play and get no sound.... you find that your peddles and volumes have been maxed and the amp no longer works.... and no explanation from the other band.

You take it to the shop and have to get an output transformer shipped from overseas because there are none available in the U.S. for this Vintage amp and it costs some hefty $$$$.... Should you expect the coward that burnt it and ran to at least pay half? Or do you chalk it up to lessons learned?

Lesson learned.....The hard way. That stinks man. In the roughly 500 gigs I played back in the day. I only ever let 3 guys play through my rig. At a couple of benefits, we supplied PA but our sound tech ran the board. The sound tech from the other band could tell him what he wanted to hear but no touchy. I was always amazed at musicians that would let just anyone play through their gear. don't get me wrong, it's very generous but, you're takin' a chance.

Ouch, that sucks, isn't it hard being such a nice guy sometimes?

So you mean you never talked to the dude that was using your guitar after they played?

If he just bolted and didn't even stick around to say "I F@#$ed up Sorry" then he isn't a very stand up guy is he?

Just one of those situations that are very hard to win.

Uhhh.... you guys are pretty nice.

If someone (ab)uses your property, just because you let them doesn't forgive negligence on their part. While you can't get blood from a stone, you can at least try - I say tell them they owe you, if they refuse take them to court.

Total BS on their part - punk-asses.

Lesson learned. You were really nice to let the guy use your gear, but it was at your risk. Repeating here, that was really cool of you to do that. It's just a shame some people don't respect what they're given.

Id at least explain to the kid that it was a vintage amp, and just how much it cost, then ask him if he would be willing to pay a certain amount. Also, talk to his daddy about the situation. If they agree to pay, cool. If not, then you have a decision of whether to let it go, or stick the hounds on 'em. Either way, you can say that you sorta did something about it.

This is an unfortunate situation, sorry to hear about it. Shipping on one of those transformers alone probably cost as much as a typical stompbox.

I have to agree with others, though, and say "lesson learned". I typically allow others to use my rig, but never, ever take my eyes off of it.

The douchebag is not legally liable for repairs unless you forewarned him with a "you break it, you buy it" kind of statement. Even then, its pretty iffy. If he ran like a scared antelope, I doubt if this guy will ante up. Of course, you could lean on him. lol.

Id have to agree with Lonewolf and the others here by saying lesson learned, but there would also be a lesson taught. Someone would be digging my boot out of their ass...lol  Good luck getting it all resolved.

Also, I might not post that person's name here, but I'd definitley tell my buds to steer clear. The guys in Back In Black ripped me off for some stage gear ten years ago, and I never forget. Oops, did I say that? 8) ----->JMS

Actually... I'm pretty much over it now, this happened back in the late nineties pretty much when my brother and I were just starting out on the scene. The situation only came to mind when I saw the rat bastards name a few times here on Rock Page recently.... but I'm not holding a grudge!

I seriously only wanted to get some opinions on the topic because at the time it happened I did confront him and the sorry pRick tried to give me some weed for the damages! :x

I would see him from time to time at different bars and he pretty much new to stay clear.... I don't want to bring his name up now anyhow... Justice was served up rather nicely over the years because, as I understand, he still isn't worth a fuck as far as anyone is really concerned. In fact I feel petty for resorting to name calling over something that happened that long ago but it still burns me up. I guess it's okay to call names on the forum.... "Sticks & Stones......." as the saying goes, right??

What's funny is, though I'm a lot wiser now, I will still let just about anyone come up and jam with my gear only because I love to see others getting into the groove..... but as Lonewolf said, I will never take my eyes off of it again!!

That guy was no musician

"Musician" isn't just a job , or a title. There's a lot that goes along with it....The most important thing that goes , is ....We stick together , and we don't screw each other...Even if this guy couldn't afford to help out with expenses , he should have stayed around to apologise , and do what he could...

Not a lot of us are rich , but you don't do that to another musician.....Jeff

I would never walk up to a band that I didn't know and ask to sit in. It just makes you look like a ham and an ametuer, IMO. Actually, I would never ask at all; I would only sit in if I were offered the chance. It's one thing if someone you know tells you that you can sit in (when he/she is the one who made the offer, of course), but asking a band that you don't even know if you can sit in.........I don't know, I just never liked that.

Dan, I remember you telling me that story. Wasn't it that Silvertone amp that was blown? That amp's the shiznitz. (Since nobody said anything about my "shiznitz" in the other thread, I'm just going to assume that it's cool if I say "shiznitz" on RP.)

That was the one.... it still sounds really good too! We don't use it that much because I don't want it to permanently retire
