My step-dad said that he thought he saw something on the news saying that Jimmy Buffet died. Was he seeing things or is this true?

No. Jimmy Buffet is alive and well. A drummer who worked with Buffet named Kenny Buttrey, passed away on Sunday. Kenny had worked with Jimmy Buffett, Bob Dylan (Blonde On Blonde and Nashville Skyline albums), and Neil Young (Harvest and Harvest Moon albums, and was a member of the "Stray Gators, Young's backing band in the early 70's).

You have definitely heard Kenny's playing, however, as he was on Jimmy Buffet's "Margaritaville".
