Fate vs. Free Will
Fate vs. Free Will
Alright, you spiritual seekers......
What do you think rules the world? Fate or free will? Are we destined to decide or do we decide to be destined? Did I choose to write this post or were the keystrokes predetermined in the sands of time?
What do you think?

I totally agree with Jimi on this one. You're dealt the cards and you decide what to do with them. If you have enough faith in the cards that you're going to get something you need from the deck, then you'll get it.Jimi Hatt wrote:Both. It's like a poker game . . . you may not be able to control what card you'll be dealt next, but you can analyze and anticipate and make decisions that maximize the chances that things will turn out the way you want them to.

I scares me to think that any of your actions are pre-destined!!!

Theoretically, there are an infinite number of timelines, where each timeline is different from the next.grimmbass wrote:Alright, you spiritual seekers......
For instance, there is a timeline where the only difference is that you typed 5 periods after "seekers" instead of 6, and 4, and 3, and 2... there are timelines where you and I do not exist at all. Each timeline is governed by choice, but since every possible combination is covered and everything happens, there is an overall predestiny.

Fate
I believe we have NO control over ourselves or the world around us, you may say" every thing is a choice " but i believe those choices are pre designed for us , Example there is a day I will die and has been for 35 years I may die in a car crash or a lightning strike etc.. but when it's my time to die i will die if I choose not to get in the car then I will be hit by one or my heart will fail but I WILL DIE!!
I'm glad I didn't have to fight in a war, I'm glad I didn't get killed or kill somebody, I hope my kids enjoy the same lack of manhood

I guess one way to look at this would be to think of what would happen if you could go back in time.
Common sceince fiction feels if you would travel back in time and change something small you could change history. Nicoli Tesla was never born would we have radio? Thomas Edison is born blind do we have lights or electricity?
If someone where to change something in the past we may not exist at all!! I know its not possible now, but ya never know.
Your Choice or your destiny?

Yes, that's the Chaos Theory!!! It's basically about insignificant events having a monumental impact. The example that is always used to illustrate it is a butterfly causing hurricanes. It's used to predict long-term outcomes in complex systems. (for everything from socialology, to quantum mechanics) It really helps you understand theories such as teleology.onetooloud wrote:I guess one way to look at this would be to think of what would happen if you could go back in time.

Personally, I think reality is merely a subjective experience, and if total ego loss were obtained, "reality" would be rendered obselete. Thus, fate vs. free will doesn't matter either way. Of course, you would need to use reality to provide sustenance and other 1st circuit survival tools. That's why the Buddha spoke of the "middle road"; there's no point in living like a total ascetic and going sick because you believe suffereing is suppose to be spiritual. Suffering is suffering, and it sucks no matter which way to look at it. Oh man, now were getting into Timothy Leary and Eastern philosophy, and I digress.

And Jae likes dirt..
I think it's both. I think you are destined in purpose. Fate has dealt you cards but you can shuffle them about. You have free choice what to do, but ultimately your life is mapped out.. so you're stuck. At least one of you will understand when I say that the fates have been against alot of things that I've tried to do, but I've fought them and won the one thing I wanted most in life. They pop up occasionally and try to ruin it...but as of now it's thriving strong.
So.. both. ::flips fate the finger::

hey all iceman here, i could be wrong and in left field with this but a few years back my aunt was strangled to death by her husband and my cousin (her son) and myself found her body in her home a week after it happened and it destroyed his damn near perfect life to the point where he stopped coming out of his room and turned all of his emotion off to the rest of us .one year later to the day he died . i figured it was because he didnt want to go on without his mother . now to get to the point was that his fate to have his mother murdered and destroy his life , was it fate that he became sick and died when he just could not function without his mother or was it his free will to let his body deteriorate so that he could be laid to rest next her where we buried them both. ................................the iceman cometh
beware the opposition is coming

I agree w/ the other posts above... Fate deals you your hand & Free Will allows you to play it. Now of course we don't always make the right decisions and sometimes we do learn from our mistakes. But I am a True Believer that things happen for a reason! And we are where we are suppose to be for a reason! A Heartfelt Example: all of the people who did not loose their lives on 9/11.

Ice man...
When I was younger, I was to stay the night before my sisters graduation with gramma M. I ended up helping gramma Y that night and staying at her house that night. Gramma M was cool with that. That night Gramma M died. If I had gone to her house, I would have woken up with a dead body beside me (she passed on that night.) or would I have kept her living longer than that night? Who knows. But was that fate or choice? Everything has two sides. I guess when we meet the maker, we can ask Him/Her/Them.
