Ibanez TK999HT
Joe,
Ya, I did get the TungSol in there. And, now that it's in there, it's prolly
goin' to stay.
The Void knob, well, I guess the best way to describe it is that it adjust
how fast a note(s) decays. And, yep, they do refer to it as an adjustable
noise gate.
Didn't actually play this, but I think it gives a good example. You know
the tune "Communication Breakdown", but Zep? You play the Open E,
the do the change from D-A-D the 5th? Where you're releasing the chords
and going to the next, you can adjust how long those in between notes linger,
plus that Open E note wouldn't be ringing behind it as long. You can make
them hang for a bit, or go away pretty much instantly.
For me, the place it seems like it may have a good use is in recording. May
be able to get a good definition between changes.
It looks like it has more of application where there's a lot of fast power chord-
type picking (Metal, etc.) than I'll probably ever do.
Oh yeah...had to edit this...totally forgot about the Presence switch (Maybe the
mention of Zep reminded me). Small click switch that brightens things up JUST
a bit. Seems these "Presence" switches, whether on amps, peds, etc. either go
WAY too bright, or don't seem to do anything. This one gives just a bit more
brightness. Enough to know it's there, but not so much as to totally change how
your sound is set.
When I first hooked things up I was kind of torn as to whether to leave it on or
off since things sounded good either way. Decided to go with on since A) I like
a bit of a brighter sound, and B) Get some more highs in when we're all playing
and C) When you have Rob on bass, anything in the low end of the spectrum is
covered masterfully.

Ok, yeah I see what you mean now. So it's more of a Metal focused pedal? It definitely sounds like it is very versatile, not only because of the void knob, but also the other adjustments such as gain and EQ, coupled with the fact that you can swap out the tubes for any given sound or application.
If one had the time to swap tubes all day long and record a sample of each one, and then listen back and takes note in a log book, it would be sweet to just know which tubes and setting you would need for a certain sound.
That's saying that it's gonna be a recording only device.
And just to make something clear for everyone, no Dave, you are the instigator!
You really got me wanting to try a diferent sound. Not nessecarily a different approach to my main sound, but building another rig and starting from scratch and building something different that I before I wouldn't have thought twice about.

Maybe we're all just freakin' mental.
2 weeks ago I was (In a sense) defending SS amps...now I'm looking
at going back to running all tube and awaiting a Tweed head...
Criminy, Rob's building a high quality build bass cab...to blow it up...
How 'bout everyone builds a cab and they're just left at every venue
for anyone to use. Lot less hauling stuff around and always a surprise.

That's funny as shit man! And leave the rigs there too, kind of like 'Trading Places'. I can see Songsmith now, @ the next Mamacorn show pluggin into a 100W tubed full blown metal rig, he'd hit standby and it would tear his face off, he'd be like "Yikes!! What the hell?, such Douchery!"VENTGtr wrote:Maybe we're all just freakin' mental.

Well, got the Carvin yesterday. Took it downstairs, played a while.
Is a really nice, really good sounding amp. On its driven side, with the
JJs, it doesn't get the amount of gain I'd need (Not really why I got it or
what it was intended to for though). The clean sound is really good, as
you'd expect from Carvin. The JJs in the pre-section here get some nice
grit.
Aesthetically, I love Tweed amps. The Roosterheads, etc. Looks like
nice, old gear. Built great, an awesome amp....
BBUUUUTTTT, the downside...the Carvin and the Ibanez just don't seem
to like each other. I was actually getting frustrated a bit. It's like they were
fighting it out, choking each other down in every way. Tried to do a volume
boost with the Nano, which has been excellent with the Ibanez, and it did
nothing...least...nothing good.
I set the TubeWorks up, got the Carvin to match it on the clean side (Which,
if nothing else, reaffirms the TW), and tried again. Just not wanting to work
together. There's a Presence control on the back of the Carvin that's, in
their words, supposed to bring on a more acoustic sound. When I took
this to around 12 O'Clock it did help a lot, but there was still something
lacking (Any further, got too bright).
I did figure out that I like the Ibanez and TubeWorks together, at least in
the sounds I need for what we do, better.
I still want to swap Pre tubes sometime as well as try the Ibanez through
the FX Loop, so maybe something in there will help.

sidenote: I picked up the plywood last night and I don't think anything short of nuclear is going to punch through this.

I've also been told that if I put a layer of fiberglass/resin inside and out, the structure of the cabinet (by weight) would be stronger than steel, nigh approaching advanced composites
Wood alone is a tad softer than I had hoped..
So I'm thinking of doing that... I still have 4 yds of fiberglass cloth left over from repairing the Conquest
