Eminence Black Powder?
Eminence Black Powder?
Dang. The Wilder speaker seems to have stumped one and all.
How about this one...
Anyone use/used an Eminence Black Powder?
Thinking on a 12" speaker that can cover a wide tonal range. From
like a smooth, jazz feel (Think the stuff playing in the background of
the Wx Channel) to pretty heavy.
Like Eminence but really am looking for something that pairs well
with my Eminence Legend, whatever that may be. Obviously, another
of the same would be fine, but looking at other good options as well.
If I were willing to spend it, I'd just go for Celestion Golds...but they're
ridiculous.

I like the way this one is described:
http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl ... er=290-834
Coloration: Warm and rich, but also very clean and well defined. Great presence!
Very full and smooth. Very little cone break-up, but likes Overdrive.
Genre: All Genres
throw a divider in your box so its actualy 2-1x12's and load them with different speakers till you get the combo you like
Make the box for the biggest internal volume you'll ever need then ballast it down to the right size with foam covered 2x4 inserts..
God that sounds so ghetto...

I've never heard an Eminence speaker that I liked for guitar. They make great bass speakers, but the treble response of all the Eminence speakers that I've heard has been really irritating.
I really suggest checking out these guys:

I have their Vintage 30 clone as well as the Greenback clone and they are amazing. I haven't broken in the Green Berets yet, but they are really awesome so far. I like them better than Celestion speakers. They're very balanced. The descriptions of the speakers on the site are pretty spot on. They're also USA made and very well priced.

Actually I use Eminence now and prefer them to Celestion for the most part.
Used Jensens in the old tweed Bassman and they were obviously perfect
for that amp. But, as a general rule, like the Ems.
Interesting site though. May have to check some of their stuff out.

did anyone ever haer a cab loaded with EVs? they are supposesd to sound fantastic. btw- did you ever see Vader cabs? they have custom Eminenece speakers in them that are 480 watt(!!!) handling capacity. a speaker sounds good pushed to my ears and i can't imagine ever pushing those speakers at any volume. they have to sound really sterile but would last forever...

I have an EV ABS wedge guitar monitor with an EVM12L and also had a few Boogies with them during the 80s. The EVM12L sounds great, is practically indestructable and also weigh about 25lbs. The Celestion G12 Century comes very close to the EV, but is only 80 watts and 4lbs. It is a very loud and clean speaker with a tight bottom, but breaks up nice. Lots and lots of picking definition and maybe a touch on the bright side.Bloodsong wrote:did anyone ever haer a cab loaded with EVs? they are supposesd to sound fantastic. btw- did you ever see Vader cabs? they have custom Eminenece speakers in them that are 480 watt(!!!) handling capacity. a speaker sounds good pushed to my ears and i can't imagine ever pushing those speakers at any volume. they have to sound really sterile but would last forever...

I've been really interested in the Vader cabs since I learned about them. I know that a lot of the death metal bands who write their names in indecipherable font use the them. They have some bass cabs too, which look really cool. On the other hand, I don't know about using a cab that is marketed to a very specific style of music.Bloodsong wrote:did anyone ever haer a cab loaded with EVs? they are supposesd to sound fantastic. btw- did you ever see Vader cabs? they have custom Eminenece speakers in them that are 480 watt(!!!) handling capacity. a speaker sounds good pushed to my ears and i can't imagine ever pushing those speakers at any volume. they have to sound really sterile but would last forever...
From what I understand, Vader publishes just the instrinsic speaker specs, not what they are actually producing once they are loaded into a cab.

Yep, the EVs and especially the Celestion G12 Centurys are perfect for modeling.orangekick wrote:I have heard a couple cabs that were loaded with EV speakers. I really wasn't into them. The sound was very clear and uncolored. I would imagine that EV's would be fantastic for someone who was into modelers and that kind of thing.
The EVs can work well with other speakers. Mesa/Boogie used to make "halfback" 2x12 and 4x12 cabinets where the bottom half was a closed back and the upper half was open back. In their "premium" speaker load, they put their C90 Celestions in the top and the EVs in the bottom. The EVs provided tight bottom and definition while the C90s provided the warm, colored sound. It was a really good sounding combination.

Vader cabs malke me nervous because they supposedly have really mellow mid range which equals "scooped" sounding. and that's a big no no for me... no mid, no guitar in the mix. almost all the death metal bands i've heard (esp. Deicide) live had AWFUL guitar tone. it was always piercing highs and ridiculous amount of low with distortion that sounded like a DOD pedal. it is usually super digital and thin sounding to make it tighter to hide sloppy picking and riffing. yuck!!!
