Usage of profanity?

I have to say, I think it's up to the band. In some cases it's unprofessional. Slacker Theory doesn't use profanity, but we aren't expected to. FedUP, hell people expect those guys to swear. It's not a universal thing. Also, a bar owner should know what they are booking before they get upset about it. If you don't want a band that uses bad language, don't book em. If the band really wants to play a place that doesn't accept what they do, then the band should have to comply.

I think everyone is losing the fact that everyone is their own person. I learned a great lesson while I was in the Navy, " Just because someone doesn't like what you're doing, that doesn't mean it's a reason to stop doing it." If you don't want to swear, then don't, but don't violate my freedom of speech. This is the next step in controlling the masses. It really started with all of the "non-smoking" bullshit. I want to open up a restraunt (sp?) and have it be "ALL SMOKING", and then just watch the complaints and law suits file in, because non-smokers feel it's their RIGHT to go anywhere and be smoke free, that's bullshit. If you want to go to a place that's smoke free, pick one of the thousands that already are, but don't fuck with me running my business how i want to. But that will never happen, so if I can't choose to have an all smoking business, then I don't think anyone else has the right to ban (used loosly of course) profanity. This is a new generation that, as mentioned before, has loosened up the moral fibers of society, and that's a GREAT thing. Go to Europe and go to the beach, and just try to count the tits you see... They're everywhere, because nudity isn't viewed as a "dirty, bad" thing, it's the human body and i don't know if this is a shock, but half of the world's population has them, but in america, you better hide those titties, cuz they're "dirty, and disgusting" The old Chief Justice of the United States, John Ashcroft, had his mother make robes to drape over the statues of "Lady Justice" in the supreme court building, because the statues had...You guessed it, an exposed breast... God fucking forbid... so let's face it, we live in a "Bass- Ackwards" country that allows people like Lisa and countless others (i'm not picking on you Lisa, you're just the example here) to do whatever they like in the name of "Morals". So in closing I say, "Fuck that shit, I'm going to Canada!"
If I ever see an amputee getting hanged... I'm just gonna start yelling out letters...
Hey it could be worse...it could be like the middle east.KyleMayket wrote: Go to Europe and go to the beach, and just try to count the tits you see... I totally
I totally love to use the foulest language that I can think of. In the right situation. I agree with Rob ( oh no! ) and think that certain bands are going to do that and others are not. Know the band you are booking and make sure that the advertisement is appropriate.
I love the word fuck and I also agree that it can be one of the most versatile word in the English language.
If you are offended by a word then I guess you have to watch where you go. Like it or not obscenity is prevalent in a lot of common places now a days.

Eldorado wrote:I think the occasional slip of a "bad" word here and there is going to happen. However I think it's cheesy and unprofessional when people swear into the mic a lot at a show. I know in some cases it's artistically part of the song, and some musicians might have a hard time letting go. But to simply spew out obscenities because it's cool is actually really lame. As a musician and a performer you should always take your audience into consideration. It would sure be a shame to drop a few words early in the show and have the crowd and club owner turned off for the rest of the night. Good luck getting booked after that!! I have started several shows where parents were finishing a meal, while the kids were there listening. It would have been irresponsible to set such a bad example.
I totally agree with all of these cats. I'm not a fan of front people constantly swearing while doing MC duties. I just think it's unprofessional and shows a lack of ability as a front person. I don't see any problem with a bad word getting said on stage every now and then; hey, it is a night club (Anyone who's played at Del's Roadhouse should be familiar with the bar's "catch saying"). I just think that habitual swearing conveys poor stage presence. Furthermore, I won't answer a classified ad that has profanity in it. You're not going to get a job interview if your cover letter and resume has swearing in it. Why should I take a musician/band serious if they can't take themselves seriously enough to present themselves professionally?Lonewolf wrote:Profanity by musicians on a local stage is disrespectful, infantile, counterproductive and downright stupid.
"Look at me, I can say the F-word REALLY EFFING LOUD"
Big effing deal. We've all heard it before. Its not shocking. Nobody is impressed--except maybe the bar management.
I seriously doubt that its the kind of impression a band wants to make.
As far as swearing in songs - If it's part of the song, then go for it. It's part of the art, so to speak. Just be socially intelligent about it. It's probably not a good idea to drop F-bombs at your gig at the Christian Youth Center. We've done the "radio version" of Killin' in the Name Of at all-ages events. As far as writing - I'm not a big fan of using excessive profanity for the same reason I'm not a fan of front people using it: I think it's a crutch to cover lack of talent. As a Tool fan, I was glad to hear Maynard jettisoning a lot of the bad language in the later releases as compared to how many F-bombs he used on Opiate and Undertow.
"He's the electric horseman, you better back off!" - old sKool making a reference to the culturally relevant 1979 film.
