bad remarks about the roar event please read
below is an article on the front page of the altoona mirror...as you read it think about it for a minute...if you know anyone who was there and had a good time have them give a call to the below number stating that they enjoyed themselves..people who had children there would be especially helpful...we seperated the music on sunday which was the heavier music so that it wouldnt cause a problem and bands purposely didnt play certain songs because they were trying not to offend people...please give a call to the writer below maybe we can get a follow up...
After hearing complaints from visitors, members, residents and vendors about how organizers ran the Roar in the Mountains motorcycle rally at the Jaffa Shrine Facility last year, Shrine leaders are replacing the event with one of their own.
The event, called Rumble Thru the Alleghenies, will be held on the third weekend of September — the same as when Roar in the Mountains organizer Ken Knisely plans to hold his displaced event at Legion Park in Hollidaysburg.
September’s Roar was ‘‘chaotic,’’ with fewer vendors than expected and live music with language that offended many, especially families with children, said Rumble chairman Bill Wilkinson, a motorcycle enthusiast and Shrine member.
People identified the event with the Shrine and blamed it for the problems, he said.
So to gain control, take advantage of the event’s potential, raise money for ongoing improvements at the Shrine and ensure a family atmosphere, the Shriners have taken over, Wilkinson said.
The Shrine has a lot of volunteers and other resources to make it work, he said.
Knisely said he wishes the Shriners well and credited the organization with helping the first two years.
But it doesn’t seem right to him that the Shrine has parked its event on the same weekend as his, he said.
‘‘It seems like they’re really trying to be competitive,’’ he said.
Businesses he has talked to about vending and sponsorships are telling him it’s difficult, he said.
Wilkinson said the Shriners kept the third weekend in September because the Jaffa was booked at other times and because the implicit partnership of the first two years conferred a kind of unofficial ownership of the event.
Knisely owns the name, but the Shrine contributed heavily by allowing the event to use the Jaffa for free — except for a rental fee for one concert last year, Wilkinson said.
Chris Peters of Underground TV, which handled the music last year, said he’s puzzled by the takeover, as Shrine officials told him that there were no complaints after last year’s event.
Knisely said he doesn’t understand the complaints about family atmosphere, as he had a petting zoo, horse rides and a kids’ zone last year.
As with the Roar, the Shrine will be the central, but not the only location for Rumble and Rumble-linked activities
There will be vendors at the Jaffa, a mini-ride to other local venues, including a jazz concert downtown; a ride of more than 100 miles; a camp-out of the Christian Motorcycle Association at the Railroaders Memorial Museum; and a camp-out of the ABATE cycle group at Legion Park, plus live radio remotes, Wilkinson said.

This pretty much sums it up, I'd say.
This is also very typical of anything in Altoona that has potential, but does not line the pockets of people who need it the least. Notice no mention of proceeds going to the shriners actual cause. What a convenient coincidence that this will happen on the same weekend. Does hamburger the clown need to upgrade from a mini corvette go-cart to a new Benz or Ferrari Go-cart?
I am also sick of this "family atmosphere" bullshit.
NEWS FLASH EVERYONE: ITS A FUCKING BIKER EVENT!!!
When I think Motorcycles, I really think of taking the kids out to hang out with tattooed people in leather, bandanas, and rotten teeth with names like Mad Dog, Suicide Jack, Chopper, and....well you get it right.
I know most bikers are harmless and most actually do alot to help kids in need, but c'mon people. It's like me taking a porno back to adult world because it wasn't family friendly. Get the fuck out. Another thing I don't think of when I think family friendly; The city of Altoona. You have got to be kidding me if you think this place is family friendly. In town there is a drug dealer on every block including/especially the neighborhood around the Jaffa shrine. So we get to hear some more good old "safe music" and introduce little Dexter Bartholomew Fiore- Lawruk- Degol-Sheetz esquire jr. to Clusterfuck Thompson and his ol' lady. You know, the one who can tap a keg with her tits.
Yeah this is bullshit.

I'm curious about the "mini-ride." Is it going to be the guys in fezzes riding the mini-bikes in circles in the street?
I think we, as local musicians should make a statement to the Altoona Mirror:
Because the Jaffa Temple has supported so few local musicians in their endeavors, and Roar In The Mountains has, we, the members and users of Rockpage, will not support the Jaffa event, and will refuse to offer our considerable talents and efforts to it's organizers or vendors.
Maybe they'd just say, "Oh, well," but at least they'd get a little bad press.---->JMS

There goes my hopes for W.A.S.P. at the Jaffa, shot to hell!
I was at the Jaffa for the Friday night and Saturday afternoon music events at Roar, and the only swearing I heard was Jackyl's Jesse James Dupree during an indoor, nighttime concert!
So I guess this year we'll see two different events - the real biker event at Legion Park, and the motorcycle hobbyists, elderly riders and "family" types at the Jaffa. Anybody swearing at the Jaffa will be publicly caned.

One word...GREED! That's the real basis for the hostile take over. And for once DirtySanchez I agree with you...it's a BIKER EVENT....not kiddy land. I for one will not attend the event at the Jaffa as it stands right now- and I sure in as hell won't ride with any clowns on little motorcycles. (Clowns on Harleys who are boycotting the event at the Shrine can ride with me anyday
)

Who needs gold and diamonds when you can have chrome....
Lies Inc and I had a great time playing Roar in the Mountains last year....the "non-family-friendly behavior" referenced in the Jaffa's statement is a mystery to me. There was loud rock music, lots of people in leather (including more than a few bee-uuuu-tifuuuul ladies), and some beer drinking going on.
It was a BIKE RALLY for crying out loud!
As a motorcyclist, I'd have to say that the behavior of folks at the event was downright courteous and laid back. I've seen worse displays of aggression at high-school sporting events than at Roar in the Mountains....I guess that, by the Jaffa's standards, Friday night football games aren't "family-friendly" either.
I don't think that I'll be knocking myself out to hang at a G-rated biker rally with the high-pants khaki crowd. Count on this guy to be where the real cruiser and sport bike folks are making some noise and even dropping some 4-letter words.
What a shame to see a resurgence in cool outdoor music-themed events once again cut short. Why do people oppose FUN in this part of PA?

Hey JP - W.A.S.P. is touring now...$6000...I had to pass on them...their agent said that they need venues with high ceilings cause they have movie screnes for some crazy stage show. I also had a chance to get Testament...they wanted $8000...Testamant was only going to do two or three east coast shows.

Hey Guido! It's all so clear to me now.......
I was talking to bill today and he stated a few things that really got under my skin like bikers don't like heavy metal or goth people! He also stated that there were complaints from the neighbors about the bands swearing and it wasn't kid friendly! the only money that jaffa made was from the food that they sold, and on and on with a bunch of crap! First off I was at the show who cares if someone is dressed goth! bikers only liking rock and roll (his exact words) who says? just because
that's what him and his little, who
has the thickest wallet measuring
jerks want that's not what the rest of us want to hear? kids i
agree it's a biker rally with alcohol would you take your kid into the
cantina or one of the bars at the end of a biker run? He stated in the paper they charged the bands for playing too so they didn't make money for just selling food sounds like a little contradiction. like everyone else said there has been no mention of any of the proceeds going towards the children but my goth looking, metal listening, bad mouth, worked a booth at the event for my club raising money for sick children! It's not about complaints or anything else it's once again all about making a buck or two! I to will never support anything the jaffa ever does!

Well, next year they can call it "Purr In the Hills", because if its a big tame jazz festival, do you really think bikers are going to want to show up? Rallys (from my experience) are all about the loud noise, beer drinking, games, and festivities (from the eyes of the average joe walking through one). Thunder in the Valley is a huge success every year because it has all of those elements. They are going to find out the hard way that if they dumb something like this down, they will have to beg people to show face. (In no way making fun of jazz musicians with this thread, btw)

I like it! I don't see any reason why everyone here couldn't put something together.
I've been an avid supporter of the Shrine for many years. I understand that those vans are on the road everyday and they take money to maintain and keep running. However, I feel the local shrine unit is going about things the wrong way if they're looking to raise additional funds for their services. I think from now on I will be sending my donations directly to the hospital in Erie.

Crap like this is exactly why I made the point online and on the Backyard Rocker about Rock For The Troops participants being Altoona's most talented, yet "unknown" bands, and that it was time for us to shine in front of the bigwigs. I'm personally sick and tired of going downtown in the summer and seeing the same old 50-something dudes in bands playing the same old "safe" oldies, and the same old rich people down there watching and thinking that it's an edgy show. If I go down to the wingoffs again and hear one more oldies band, I'm gonna puke all over someone's wings. (Not you, JP)
Fuck them.
This area has so much talent, it's completely mind-boggling, yet because we're not covering or writing music in the vein of the Beach Boys or Captain & Tennile, we're friggin' outcast, drug-abusing, dirty, alcoholic low-lifes.
I'm just sick of the musical community not getting it's just due here. Jebus.

I actually brought my 4-year-old daughter to this event, and she even watched the bands with me. (I know, bad bad mom!!)
You can witness more swearing and disruptive behavior at the mall on a Friday night than I saw at this event. I felt perfectly comfortable taking her there and she had a really good time.
What a shame that Altoona is again shooting down an opportunity to bring tourism and money into the region.

hmmm. it doesnt surprise me really. if the clubs around here are about the $$$...why wouldnt the jaffa people be too??
i was just told from a club booker "why take a chance on an original act, when we know we can make money on a cover band?". its always about money. its basically the same thing here. well, the money issue anyway. greed is king here.
as far as them thinking a biker event is a family event...thats just insane.
oh yeah, and people need to realize you cant take your kids to everything. taking them to an event where there is alcohol being consumed is setting a bad example and is just irresponsible. plain and simple.
no matter how much you try to talk yourself out of it.

So, taking a child to an Altoona Curve game, Fireman's Festival, or even a family restaurant is irresponsible?Team Transylvania wrote: oh yeah, and people need to realize you cant take your kids to everything. taking them to an event where there is alcohol being consumed is setting a bad example and is just irresponsible. plain and simple.no matter how much you try to talk yourself out of it.
Roar in the Mountains had a children's section with activities for them. Taking a child there for a few hours during the day for a pony ride and to watch some music, does not set a bad example.

Bassgirl- no, i dont think its irresponsible to take children to those places, because those places are for families. however, i DO think it is irresponsible to sell alcohol @ those places if they are family events. If drinking and driving is against the law, then why have places that you have to drive to and from that sell alcohol?? ill never understand that. I think drinking around your kids is setting a bad example and is irresponsible. Now, remember, thats just my opinion. i dont care how people raise their kids. i have a friend that cant figure out why his kid cusses all the time. he himself swears all the time around the kids. the children see it as acceptable behavior and do it themselves. things like that always happen. if the kid is a little bastard, look @ the parents to see how far the apple fell from the tree. usually, not too far.
i wasnt specifically talking about you. even though you said in your thread "i know, im a bad bad mom". you must atleast think something is wrong with it to say that even in jest.
For a biker event to have a childrens section, is just strange. but i guess they figured , if the kids cant come, the parents wont either.
I have mixed feelings about this whole thing.

Really, just look at the people who operate the Jaffa. Consider those in charge, and the attitudes they have.
In the late 70's, the soft-pop duo, England Dan & John Ford Coley played the Jaffa, and it was widely rumored at that time that the Jaffa would NEVER have another "rock" concert. It would seem that the music was too loud and rowdy. Let me repeat the name of the act: England Dan & John Ford Coley. "... I'm not talkin' 'bout movin in... and I don't wanna change your life... but there's a warm wind blowin' the stars around... and I'd really love to see you tonight." Subversive stuff, that. I bet there were little kids shooting up in the aisles at that show. Total bedlam. The pit must have been off the hook.
These people are the very essense of self-important. They are retired business leaders, men used to giving orders. I'm not buying into it. I hope everyone at Rockpage will make every effort to insure not only that Roar In The Mountains is a big success (Success is truly the best revenge), but that the Whine At The Shrine stays in the background noise that weekend. I think a musician-sponsored free show elsewhere would make a nice statement to the press, and to the Jaffans. After all, who has more experience organizing shows and performing than Rockpagers do?--->JMS
