If I can remember correctly, there was a chat room in one of the earlier versions.

There was a chat room here for a long time. No one ever used it.

Actually, since Oct. 2004, when the site was moved from the old location and still had the phpbb chat room add-on, traffic has been pretty consistant, cycling between 0.8 and 1.3 million raw hits per month. As far as unique IP addresses, that averages 500 to 650 unique visitors per day. It's nice also that the weekends usually have less activity than week days, so Rockpage enthusiasts are probably going out to see live bands.

The main problem with chat rooms is security and speed. They slow down the rest of a site because they really need to run at close to real time, which can drastically affect the microprocessor usage. Without a dedicated application running, you end up having a page with a constant timed meta refresh, which is an ugly hack and a mySQL bandwidth hog.

There also are the AIM/ICQ buttons at the bottom of every post if the person is an AIM/ICQ user, which 99% of the chatters I know are.
There's no use in reinventing the wheel.
... and then the wheel fell off.

How many here use IRC chat, i did set up a Rockpage channel about a year ago but noone used it. It would be a good place to start and dont effect the website in any way. If i get enough yays ill do it again.

If you'd like, Ron, I have an existing IRC server setup with java support, all you'd have to do is insert an applet code into some page and voila, instant chat room. All the bandwidth for chat would be hosted by the chat server, not you.

I remember the attempt at IRC. Hurricane was the only one I ever seen in that channel, if I remember right. It's tough to get people to use something they don't normally use already.

Probably the easiest thing to do, since probably everyone here uses AIM, would be to just make a room/channel/whatever-they-call-it in AIM, and tell everyone what it's called/how to access it/invite/etc.

The official Poison chat room is on IRC. (dalnet server)

The downfall to IRC is it's a hotbed for spammers and hackers so alot of ppl won't use the program.

AIM chats are cool. It would just be finding the right day and time for those who wanted to do it.

hummm... not sure how the chats work on yahoo outside of setting up a yahoo group. Not like a group is the hardest thing to set up. I've ran several in the past.
