Donations
A lot of people have suggested that I put a Paypal donations button on Rockpage to help offset the cost of keeping it online and running smoothly. Total yearly costs are right around $1000 per year and though I hate asking for donations... It sure would help.
I recently started a Paypal account and was wondering what people's thoughts were on adding a donations button on this site.

One of the jams at Peter C's (RIP) was a Rockpage benefit and it was a great time and raised a decent amount of money for the site, but I would rather see those proceeds going to more worthy causes such as people in medical need or orgs like Get Closer to the Music.
I wouldn't expect a donate button to raise more money than a benefit, I just get requests for it occasionally because people want to help. In no way would it be necessary.
We are due for a Rockpage Jam though.

I don't have a ton of time either, but I'd be willing to step up if people are willing to support. Of course, if Ron would prefer not to do a benefit, then I respect his wishes. I don't want it to seem like charity. I think we owe it to Ron though for having this excellent site. I know that I've wasted a lot of bandwidth on here, haha. Keep in mind, everyone's profile is equal here (except JP and Ron, of course). There's no charges for a "Premium" membership and there is no corporate advertising. We owe it to Ron to help him upkeep the site.

I'm in either way. But a Rockpage Jam is way more fun than PayPal!Ron wrote:One of the jams at Peter C's (RIP) was a Rockpage benefit and it was a great time and raised a decent amount of money for the site, but I would rather see those proceeds going to more worthy causes such as people in medical need or orgs like Get Closer to the Music.

I think a RP benefit would be a lot of fun... You could split the proceeds as you see necessary Ron? Some to RP and some to charity...
Or fine people ten cents for posting stupid shit... Haha J/K

Bobby did a great job on the last 4 RP Jams, but organizing them is a lot more work than you would expect. If everyone wants one, some people are going to have to step up. Having a good cause to donate the proceeds to is also important.Hurricane wrote:Ive done about 4 of em so far but dont have the time right now.
Support was minimal from RP users.
How bout someone else step up and do one.
I would organize one, but I never know when I'm going to have to fly overseas for work. I've missed two out of four RP Jams because of it. The last one right before Peter C's closed, I got a call that morning at 8:30 that I had to be on a flight out of Newark at 3:00. I was bummed.

But on a serious note, When Keith (spellbound) first started talking about doing a benefit for RP it didnt make it too far. But id love to see it. And id also love to help out in anyway. I know of a handful of bands off hand that would be delighted to take part.
What's up Primates??? We are going to try to make it to the beginning of your show tonight at DC's. We don't start at the Rathskeller till 10:30, its only a block away.

What if you held a benefit, used part of the money to offset the costs of Rockpage, and anything over that went to [pic a good one] charity? Usually you have to clear it with the charity first, if you want to use their name in the advertising, or do it 50-50 with half to rockpage and the other half to charity.
Get one of the bigger clubs or a decent size hall for the benefit, and find someone to provide production, so you don't have any one band having to provide all the PA ands lights for what should be a good night of music. Get local media as a "sponsor", so they will help promote it for you.
My .0002 cents worth

I love it when a plan comes together.

If it costs roughly $1,000 a year to operate, and there's over 2,000 registered users, if members would send at least $5 a year through snail mail or Pay Pal, you'd only need a 10 percent response to cover it. I'm sure some would probably send more than $5.
Then, we could respect Ron's wishes and keep the Rockpage Jam money going to charity.
If you set up Pay Pal, Ron, you got my Lincoln.

The donation button is a brilliant idea- the expense should not be coming out of your pocket, Ron, especially with all you do as site administrator! You've created and fostered a great community here, and I'm sure enough people would gladly donate if a button was added, and/or a contribution address listed.
Just some ideas- you could have a "Thanks for your support" or Patrons section/page listing contributors, which would recognize those who donate as that sometimes helps to motivate people. Or a target/goal ticker, so that people could see how much has been raised in total, or how close we are to reaching the annual goal.
Any extra money could be used at your discretion to continue to develop and promote RP- not necessarily for charity! Letting more of the listening public know about RP, and that it's a great place to find local music schedules in one convenient location, would benefit everyone.
