Today: 3 years sober.

Post by HurricaneBob »

Hi i'm Bob and i'm an alcoholic...:P

Today was 3 years without a drink for me. Hard to believe, i still dont miss it one bit. Felix and Jeff actually presented me with a trophy this year, i was on stage and stunned. But then they had to put up with me when i was a drunk. They even quit for months till i said "its ok, have a couple, it dont bother me" The way i was going id have been in jail or dead, who knows. My wife even says im a joy to be around now :)

Ive seen in the last 3 years of playing the bars how bad some people have the sickness, and it is a sickness. I hope you never get to that point but some do. I think seeing this has been the best thing for me, like looking in a mirror. I don't even toke like i used to, i didn't want it to be a crutch to make up for drinking. Remembering every 3rd set is a treat now too!

Anyways, there is help if you need it and its never too late.

Thanks

Laugh if you want to, really is kinda funny, 'cause the world is a car and you're the crash test dummy.

Oh, that reminds me. I think I'm going to not drink this sunday while I'm sitting in with you guys. Maybe I'll be decent for once, hehe.

Congrats, Bobby. Even though I obviously don't get to see you everyday, it was obvious in your physical apperance once you quit drinking. Your face looked heavy and tired when drinking. Now it looks healthy.

Sometimes you need a wake up call on these things. Rob got his back in November. Some aren't as lucky as others, but it makes you thankful when people can sucessfully put down the bottle.

Big congrats Bob. I too well know the pain my brother was an alcoholic despite the help he was given he lost the battle. 10 years ago Thanksgivng day he hit a snow plow head on killed him and his best friend. just before he had a near miss with the plow his held his bottle and cheered the driver. He wasn't so lucky on his next pass . We lost 2 special guy's that day. Thank you for sharing your success with us. Your decision has an effect on all of us who love you and your music. Good deal Bobby! 8) 8)
I went 5 years myself (2002 - 2007)
I went thru a bad breakup with a girlfriend of 7 years and drank my feelings away. It was about a 2-3 month period, early last year and it's been about 6 months sober for me this time around.

The first couple weeks are hard, and I found it easier to distance myself from the bars and some of my alky friends for a little bit, just to help get away from it and off on the right foot.
I got a DUI in 2000 and led the cops on a high speed chase, did some time in jail and that's initially what "cured" me :lol:
Now, I dont even miss it...although I have some substitutes to tide me over.. :lol:

Here's to another 3 years my man 8) :D

Way to go Bob!! We are proud of you.

You've been a friend for a long time. I'll not forget the time I had my car hood up on Broad Avenue and you drove by, then came back around, stopped to see if I needed help. I was just one of many Hurricanes fans at the time, not a musician in any band. That impressed me.

Turns out I lived there and was just checking my oil. lol.

That's the Bob I know.

Bobby;
It has been my pleasure to get to know you and to have the priveleged of groovin' with you on Sunday nights. As stated many times already, we are all proud of your committment to becoming a healthier Bobby and more professional musician without the burden of alcohol.
Keep the faith;
Pat

That's absolutely terrific Bobby! I think you are just expanding your role in the community. We've all admired your playing and liked you for your personality for years, but perhaps now from your example some of us can be more comfortable with not having to be sloshed all the time to "enjoy" playing music. Besides, you've got to stay healthy, my middle son has got the makings of a drummer in him, and you need to be around to show him a trick or two.

Congrats, Bobby! I went over my first year on Jan. 1st, and that was a really hard year. I don't know how you do it for 3, but I'm gonna try to emulate ya and ride that wagon for a long time!! Way to go!

Great job, Bobby. I can say "I knew you when," and way back 20 years ago, it was fun and crazy... but life goes on, and wives and kids happen to us, and suddenly you can't always be fun and crazy. It can be tough for a musician, if we wanted to, we could be drunk or high all the time and never buy a drink... the temptations are many, but you just say the word "No."
I think you're a deeper, more introspective person now, but you're still good ol' Bob, and that's all I'll ever ask of you. Congratulations.--->JMS
