Choices... Choices...
Ok, first the setup:
If you had a choice between two basses that you must have. Both are pretty much the end-all in your mind as far as what you are looking for. Both are the same price roughly.
Now the choices:
Modulus Quantum 4 (natural walnut top)
Carvin LB75 (swamp ash body, natural finish)
The Modulus Q4 will need about $150-$200 worth of refinishing to a nick on the headstock finish (not NEEDED, but unless you fix it, its going to slowly get larger.)
The Carvin is in near mint condition. It only needs re-setup.
The other issue is there are two Modulus' available. (modulus have that carbon fiber neck)
One a 98 Flea with Lane Poor pickups, no truss rod.
One the 00 Quantum with EMG's, with truss rod.

I've said "this is the last bass I'll need" many times already. Never seem to keep. I've fulfilled "my" tone long ago, but there's always the next bass I gotta have just to try.
If it were up to me, I'd get the Mod with the truss rod first. I haven't met a Carvin I like yet...

I'll get to this one later...

Hmmm...

I wonder what I'd get in that circumstance. Swamp Ash is pretty nice too.
Actually, do you know what year is the Carvin? Any LB from 2006 to now is going to have the 18v preamp and H50 stacked humbuckers - unless of course it has the Ernie Ball-styled HB. Any LBs from the 2000s and late 90s are going to have J99 single-coils. LBs earlier than that are going to have older generation H50s. Owning a 2000 LB and a 2008 Icon, I can tell you that the old preamps were good, but the new pres absolutely destroy. They easily compete with anything put out by Bartolini. The LB of mine that you played had the J99s. I don't know if I've ever played H50s, but all reports I hear say that they're excellent pickups, especially the newer generation. You can tell the pickups apart by looking at the logo. If you're looking at a J99, the Carvin logo on the pickup is going to have a little dot beside it. H50s shouldn't have the dot.
With that said, the Modulus is going to be a nice piece. Their body styles never piqued my interest, but I'm sure they play and sound amazing.

Well, if you want, stop by a gig on a night off and check both of them out. I have the LB restrung with some new DRs and the neck tweaked, so you should get a good feel for which one you like better. I was just telling Kenny the other night that I really like both basses, and I don't think I prefer one over the other. They both have two different sounds and feels, but neither one seems superior to the other. Throughout my bass-owning history, I've always had one instrument that was clearly better than my others.JackANSI wrote:Actually Paul, it looks the same as your LB... which is why its in the running with a Modulus..
But in the Modulus' price range, I could be into a IC5 with only a couple hundred more..
Oh also, I need to get in contact with you about that internship. I think I'm going to do it this summer if it's still possible.

That being said, I vote Jackson as always.

(But I dont think Jackson makes a good bass anymore, so I'll vote Jackson.
Carvin probably, cause ya know you've been wanting an LB-75 for a long time now...

I like the sound of Modulus basses. The only thing I never liked about them is the relief of the necks without a truss rod. I gathered from talking with you is that you like a fairly straight neck. The Modulus necks without a truss provided more relief than I liked.

I've wanted a modulus a lot longer...
I've actually decided to wait till the TRB is done, see if that trem is to my liking.
If yes, I might throw the money into a CD and wait till next year, leaving my options open.
If no, Carvin.
