Worst band to ever get a recording contract

Post by grimmbass »

My vote would be the White Stripes. I have a hard time believing that anyone could actually like a band that sucks that bad (I've heard malfunctioning washing machines with better timing than that drummer). Their success MUST have something do with media hype and the opinions of some douchebag at Rolling Stone....at least I keep telling myself that in the hopes that the general public has SOME kind of taste!

Who do you think sucks? Who deserves to NOT be on a major label?

I'll have to go with any band that has "The" in their name. The White Stripes, The Hives, The Vines, etc. I don't know how anyone can listen to that trash.

As far as Nickelback goes, I am a fan but even I get tired of the songs that the radio in this area beats to death. I would suggest listening to some of their songs that aren't radio friendly, like "Followed You Home" or "Side of a bullet". You guys might change your mind about them.
Pour me another one, cause I'll never find the silver lining in this cloud.

I love the White Stripes. The major labels feed us so many generic me-too acts that it's amazing they get behind a band as stripped-down and primitive as that. Meg White is a fucking amazing drummer. Seriously. She's so far removed from the typical rock drummer that it sounds really fresh to me.

The bands that turn me off are the aforementioned prefab "in the style of" acts. There are too many of those to mention, though.

Here's maybe a controversial choice: Robert Johnson.

Whoa! Whoa. Robert Johnson? You hurt me.
Okay... I'm gonna go with the girl "country" group, SHeDaisy (and, yes, I meant to spell it that way... that should give you some indication of just how bad they suck). Along with Shania Twain, they helped put the final bullet in country radio a few years ago. To say they're bad is putting yourself at risk for a lawsuit from the word, "bad," for defamation of character. 8)
Robert Freaking Johnson. The guy that took rural blues and spun it towards rock and roll. Why I oughta... :D --------->JMS

I agree with Jimi... The White Stripes are about the only band I would even consider spending $$ on in the last 15 years...

Jack White is a musical genius and Meg brings the noise on the drums.....

I think we're so used to hearing prettied up studio/computer generated crap that we've forgotten what a good old loud crude ROCK band sounds like....

Last drummer to get as crazy and free with the beat in the studio as Meg does was Keith Moon....

I liked The White Stripes first single so much, I bought their CD and found it hard to believe there were only TWO PEOPLE in the Band  until I saw them on a late night show. Btw, if worst signed Bands have The at the beginning of their name, that includes The Beatles, The Clash, The Eagles, The Kinks, The Ramones and The Who. If we are to include un-signed, we'd add 2 Bands the poster of this thread is a member of. :D

The White Stripes don't play IN TIME!

The White Stripes write riffs that a third grader could imitate within two guitar lessons.

I saw the White Stripes on the Grammies a few years back....though I'm not a fan of the Grammies either, I was amused to watch the audience shots. There was a room full of seasoned musicians with looks of disbelief on their faces...as Jack White butchered a guitar solo like a drunken plumber hitting a lead pipe with a baseball bat in a failed attempt to "improvise," you could almost see the audience saying "how did these losers get a showcase spot?"

Again, popularity generally has jack shit to do with talent and EVERYTHING to do with buzz and marketing. I haven't hated a band this much since Creed was around.

I nominate another band to the list: Jet. Contrived stupid lyrics combined with rip off riffs that could (again) be played by a third grader! Even a drunken third grader who's huffing a bag of gas!

Yeah, I'm with Kent on this one 110%.
I can't stand the White Stripes either.
Meg White plays like one of those cymbal pounding monkey dolls thats running out of batteries and I can't stand Jack's voice.
I'll admit their music is different and stripped down and I'm all for that generally but when it comes to these two I think they definately missed the mark somewhere.
Its like...jesusf-ingchrist...find a decent bass player and put someone on the mic who can actually sing...and could someone find Meg a friggin' metronome already!

But perhaps, since they can actually play their instruments (I use this loosely) a definate choice otherwise would be Paris Hilton...I mean...come on!!! I don't even think I have to go into detail about why I chose her.

Edited for baaaaaad spelling.
Worth dying for. Worth killing for. Worth going to hell for. Amen.

Oh man, where do I start... So many "bands" out there these days...

Hanson never should've even been considered for a contract. They win their local talent contest and people think they're big

Next, I'll just agree with a few voices... I don't like The White Stripes. I don't like Jet much either for that matter, but at least their hooks are at least good enough to catch my attention and not throw things at the TV when they're on. Course this's all "pop rock" is these days

I'm gonna toss Coldplay into the mix. They're pretty much a Radiohead ripoff, and Radiohead at least makes a few twists here and there that hold my attention. I don't like the general sound, the general feel of that kind of music, even on my "soft" moods

I never cared for that band Crazytown either, and I'll expand that to half of all rap-rock bands. Rage is decent as-is Faith No More and a few others that I can't think of off-hand, but the general genre just drives me up the wall, especially Crazy-f'in-town! It sounds to me like they took the whole idea of hip-hop to get girls, threw in a few instruments for the additional "I just want girls" look, then tapped their junk against the strings, drumheads, the microphone,... Whatever they could, just to make any sound at all! It's pitiful that everything some people do is just because it'll get them attention...

Girl: Hey, are you in a band?
CT member: Are you gonna give me head?
Girl: Only if you're in a band
CT member: ...Yeah, I'm in a band
...And so on and so forth

Theres so many bands i hate. The White Stripes suck so bad, its barely music.
I really dont like Nickleback either. I guess they are good musicians and they have a talent to write radio tunes, but they killed Roadrunner Records integrity.
Hip Hip and Rap is on another plane of shittyness. I dont know how anyone can stand that audio vomit.

It may be simple but, I love it.

"Icky Thump"

Yah-hee, icky thump
Who'd-a thunk?
Sittin' drunk
On a wagon to Mexico

Her hair, what a chump
And my head
Got a bump
When I hit it on the radio

Red-head señorita
Lookin' dead
Came to said,
"I need a bed" en español

gimme a drink a water
I'm gonna sing around the collar
Well, I don't need a microphone

[guitar solo]
[keyboard solo]

Icky thump, with a lump
In my throat
Grabbed my coat
And now it's reckon
I was ready to go

Yeah, I swam beside the hair
She had one white eye
One blank stare
Lookin' up, lyin' there

On a stand in her hair
Was a candy cane
Black rum, sugar cane
Dry ice, somethin' strange!

La la, la la la la la la la la la laaa laaa laaa

[keyboard solo]

White Americans, what?
Nothing better to do?
Why don't you kick yourself out?
You're an immigrant too?

Who's usin' who?
What should we do?
Well you can't be a pimp
And a prostitute too

Icky thump, handcuffed to a bunk
Robbed blind
Looked around
And there was nobody else

Left alone
I hit myself with a stone
Went home
And learned how to clean up after myself

My vote would go to Any cheesedick Goth/Metal Nu-metal band.

Disturbed
Godsmack
Linkin Park
Dope
Kitty

Are you people kidding me with Nickelback? I'm sorry, I have a ton of respect for Nickelback. At first, yea they did the cookie-cutter industry thing, but their new stuff is really good and they have talent. Just try to sing a few of their tunes with the harmonies, they are very much under rated.

As far as signed bands go, I think the grateful dead suck.

I'm very glad to see that I'm not the only person here who hates the White Stripes. I will give Jack credit, though; he does have a knack for writing a catchy hook. Unfortunately, once you get past the hooks, there's not much else there. It's kind of like a candy bar: It tastes really good, but there's no nutritional value. No wonder they don't have a bass player. Any bass player with half a pocket would probably chuck their amp head at Meg White for her total lack of pocket or lack of simple mechanical music concepts like playing a fucking fill in fucking time. Teach that woman some paradiddles or something so she can do more than just bang on the toms on one and three every fucking song!

I also hate all of those pretentious sounding indie bands who can barely play their instruments, but yet, pretentious rock critics rave on and on about how brilliant they are. I don't like it when people with lack of talent hide behind the "It's art and it's subjective" line to try and justify why they suck.

Hmmmph, if you didn't HATE when I make a really good point, I would say great minds tend to think alike.

The Music I enjoy doesn't always have to be pretty, polished and perfect...then again, I'm not a Musician. :D With the Grateful Dead, sometimes it takes people a while to finally understand them/the Music. Although, some will never understand them, as with soooo much in life.

I do like some Garcia/David Grisman from time to time though.
